Why Your Disc Bulge May Not Be Healing – San Diego, CA

If you've been diagnosed with a disc bulge or herniated disc and you're still dealing with back pain, neck pain, sciatica, numbness, or tingling months—or even years—later, you're not alone.

One of the most common questions we hear at The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego is:

"Why hasn't my disc bulge healed yet?"

The answer may surprise you.

Disc Bulges Don't Heal Like Most Other Injuries

When you strain a muscle, sprain a ligament, or cut your skin, your body sends a rich blood supply to the injured area to help support healing and repair.

Spinal discs are different.

Unlike muscles and many other tissues in the body, spinal discs have very little direct blood supply.

Why does that matter?

Because blood carries oxygen, nutrients, and other essential components that tissues need to heal.

Without a strong blood supply, healing can be slower and more challenging.

This is one reason disc bulges and herniated discs can continue causing symptoms long after the original injury occurred.

What Is A Disc Bulge?

Your spinal discs act like shock absorbers between the bones of your spine.

Each disc contains:

✅ A tough outer layer called the annulus

✅ A softer inner portion called the nucleus

Over time, injury, repetitive stress, poor posture, heavy lifting, sports injuries, or simple wear and tear can cause the disc to bulge outward.

In some cases, the inner portion of the disc may push through the outer fibers, creating a disc herniation.

These injuries may irritate nearby nerves and contribute to symptoms such as:

❌ Lower back pain

❌ Neck pain

❌ Sciatica

❌ Numbness

❌ Tingling

❌ Pain traveling into the arms or legs

❌ Weakness

Why Do Some Disc Bulges Cause Symptoms For Years?

Because discs have a limited blood supply, they often do not recover the same way a muscle injury might.

In addition, most people continue to place stress on the injured disc every day through:

• Sitting

• Driving

• Bending

• Lifting

• Twisting

• Poor posture

Over time, these stresses can continue to irritate an already injured disc.

This does not mean recovery is impossible.

It simply means that disc injuries are often more complex than many people realize.

Can A Disc Bulge Heal?

In some cases, yes.

Research has shown that certain disc injuries can decrease in size over time, and many patients experience significant symptom improvement.

However, every case is different.

Factors that may influence recovery include:

✅ The size of the disc injury

✅ The location of the injury

✅ Whether a nerve is involved

✅ Age and overall health

✅ Activity levels

✅ The type of treatment being used

This is why a proper evaluation and MRI review are often important.

Understanding Your Treatment Options

Many patients are surprised to learn that surgery is not always the first option for a disc bulge or herniated disc.

Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment options may include:

• Activity modification

• Physical therapy

• Chiropractic care

• Spinal decompression therapy

• Home rehabilitation exercises

• Medical management

• Surgical consultation when appropriate

Not every patient is a candidate for every treatment.

The key is determining the true source of your symptoms and identifying the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific condition.
