Why Stretching Your Low Back May Actually Be Making Your Sciatica Worse – San Diego, CA

Why Stretching Your Low Back May Actually Be Making Your Sciatica Worse – San Diego, CA

One of the biggest mistakes many people with sciatica make is repeatedly stretching forward trying to “loosen up” their lower back.

For some conditions, stretching can absolutely help.

But for many patients suffering from disc bulges, disc herniations, or severe sciatica, aggressive forward bending may actually continue irritating the injured disc and nerve.

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy Boelk, DC regularly evaluates patients who unknowingly worsened their symptoms by repeatedly stretching into positions that continued compressing the injured spinal disc.

Dr. Boelk is a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor, Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist, founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy, and has spent over 20 years specializing in severe spinal disc injuries and sciatica conditions. He has personally performed more than 100,000 spinal decompression sessions and helps patients locally, nationally, and internationally seeking non-surgical solutions.

Why Sciatica Often Gets Worse With Forward Bending

Many cases of sciatica involve pressure affecting a spinal disc and nearby nerve root.

When some patients repeatedly bend forward:

  • the disc may compress further
  • pressure inside the disc may increase
  • irritated nerves may become more sensitive
  • symptoms may travel further into the leg
  • inflammation may increase

This is especially common with:

  • disc bulges
  • disc herniations
  • extruded discs
  • degenerative disc conditions
  • sitting intolerance
  • severe nerve compression

Patients often notice:

  • increased leg pain after stretching
  • numbness into the foot
  • burning pain after sitting
  • sharp pain tying shoes
  • worsening symptoms after yoga or toe-touching stretches
  • temporary relief followed by worsening symptoms later

This does not mean stretching is always bad.

It means the wrong movement for the wrong condition can continue aggravating the injured tissue.

Why Generic Online Exercises Can Be Dangerous

One major issue today is that people often search online and begin random exercises without understanding what is actually causing their pain.

Two patients may both have “low back pain,” but:

  • one may need mobility work
  • another may need stabilization
  • another may need extension-based movements
  • another may need imaging and evaluation immediately

Without proper evaluation, some exercises may continue worsening disc compression.

That is why Dr. Boelk emphasizes identifying:

  • whether the problem is disc-related
  • which movements worsen symptoms
  • whether nerve compression is involved
  • whether instability exists
  • how posture and mechanics contribute

What Many Patients Actually Need Instead

For some disc patients, carefully reducing forward bending stress while improving spinal positioning may help calm symptoms significantly.

Depending on the patient, treatment may involve:

  • modified extension-based movements
  • posture correction
  • decompression strategies
  • core stabilization
  • hip mobility work
  • walking programs
  • movement retraining
  • spinal decompression therapy

However, the key is customization.

Not every patient should perform the same exercises.

How Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) May Help

At our office, we exclusively use the FDA-cleared DRX9000 spinal decompression system because of its precision and ability to target specific spinal levels.

Unlike generalized traction systems, the DRX9000 allows customized:

  • spinal positioning
  • decompression angles
  • force progression
  • treatment protocols
  • disc targeting

The goal is to help reduce abnormal pressure affecting damaged discs and irritated nerves naturally.

Many patients also do not realize decompression treatment alone is only one part of the process.

Dr. Boelk also evaluates:

  • hip mobility
  • spinal mechanics
  • posture
  • movement habits
  • core weakness
  • muscle imbalances
  • stability deficits

This is important because passive therapies alone often fail if the patient continues repeatedly stressing the injured area mechanically.

Real Patient Experiences

“I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Boelk and his staff at the Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic Center of San Diego. They have a great protocol and the best decompression machines. I’ve been to other places with sub par machines and didn’t get any benefit. Dr. Boelk is very attentive and cares about each person, you can see it in how he interacts with everyone. Been undergoing treatment for about 12 sessions now and the sciatica is gone and I’m almost back to normal, didn’t think it would ever heal but even after the first session I had tremendous relief and could sleep mostly pain free for the first time in months. Definitely worth the investment! Thank you!”

— Michael Langsdale, San Diego, CA

Michael experienced major relief from severe sciatica after failed treatment elsewhere and noticed early improvement with Dr. Boelk’s customized decompression approach.

“I had really bad back problems to the point I couldn’t sleep, also had pain radiating along the sciatic nerve which ran down one leg from the lower back—caused by an accident.

I came in and talked to Dr. Cassidy about my back problems. He evaluated me and mentioned I was a good candidate for this treatment. After the first 2 decompression sessions my sciatic pain was gone and we were able to work on the root of the problem. I did a total of 24 sessions, after which I was able to start rehabilitation training to strengthen my core.

The office is super nice and the staff’s customer service is above and beyond.

Back and neck issues are horrible to live with—trust me, I know firsthand. I gained weight, took pain killers, went into depression, and had major anxiety. I’m over it now—feeling better, walking, sleeping well, and starting to have a better social life as well.

The experience for me has been nothing but excellent. Dr. Cassidy Boelk is hands down amazing—super glad I came here.”

— Abel T., San Diego, CA

Abel experienced major improvement in sciatic symptoms, sleep, and quality of life after beginning customized decompression and rehabilitation treatment.

“Dr. Boelk has been a life saver. Have had constant lower back and sciatica pain for over 8 plus months, no pills helped and on track for multiple shots but with the treatment given I have found relief and down to zero pain. As a firefighter that relies on his body to help others and the results I have experienced it's totally worth looking into what Dr. Boelk can do for you.”

— Joshua T., San Diego, CA

Joshua found major relief after months of severe sciatic pain and was able to avoid escalating medical procedures.

Why Experience Matters

Not all sciatica is treated the same.

Some patients worsen because they continue performing movements that irritate the injured disc without realizing it.

Dr. Boelk has spent decades specializing specifically in:

  • spinal disc injuries
  • severe sciatica
  • nerve compression conditions
  • spinal decompression protocols
  • rehabilitation integration
  • movement correction

He also trains doctors nationwide through the Spinal Decompression Training Academy on advanced decompression and rehabilitation strategies.

What To Do Next

If stretching, bending forward, sitting, or exercising continues aggravating your sciatica, the first step is determining whether the problem may actually be disc-related and whether certain movements may be continuing to worsen the condition.
