Why Is My Herniated Disc Not Getting Better? | Clairemont, CA

Why Is My Herniated Disc Not Getting Better? | Clairemont, CA

You’ve Tried Treatment. Why Are You Still Hurting?

If you have a herniated disc, you probably expected to be getting better by now.

Maybe you were told to give it time.

Maybe you've already tried physical therapy, chiropractic care, medications, exercises, stretching, massage, acupuncture, or an epidural injection.

Some treatments may have helped temporarily.

Others may not have helped much at all.

But you're still dealing with symptoms such as:

  • Lower-back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Buttock or leg pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Burning nerve pain
  • Difficulty sitting
  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Pain when bending or lifting
  • Flare-ups that keep returning

Eventually, it's reasonable to ask:

“Why is my herniated disc still not getting better?”

If weeks or months are passing without meaningful improvement, simply trying another treatment may not be the best place to start.

First, you may need to understand why you're still hurting.

Still in Pain? Find Out Why Before Trying Something Else

Persistent symptoms don't necessarily mean you need surgery.

They also don't automatically mean you need spinal decompression.

They mean your condition may deserve another look.

Some important questions may include:

Is the herniated disc actually responsible for my symptoms?

Is a spinal nerve still being irritated or compressed?

Does my MRI correlate with what I'm experiencing?

Could spinal or foraminal stenosis be contributing?

Is my spine stable?

Why didn't physical therapy or another treatment help?

Am I a candidate for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

And just as importantly:

Is there a reason I should NOT receive spinal decompression?

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, the first objective is determining what may be causing your continued symptoms and whether you're an appropriate candidate for treatment.

5 Reasons Your Herniated Disc May Still Be Hurting

There isn't one explanation that applies to everyone.

That's precisely why an individualized evaluation can matter.

1. A Spinal Nerve May Still Be Irritated

A lumbar herniated disc can irritate or compress a spinal nerve, which may cause symptoms that travel far beyond the lower back.

You may experience:

  • Buttock pain
  • Thigh pain
  • Calf pain
  • Foot pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Burning
  • Weakness

With a cervical herniated disc, symptoms may travel into the shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers.

If your back pain has decreased but you're still experiencing significant symptoms down your leg, the nerve-related component may still need attention.

2. You Keep Feeling Better—Then the Pain Comes Back

This can be an incredibly frustrating pattern.

You finally start feeling better.

So naturally, you begin doing more.

Maybe you return to the gym.

Sit through a long workday.

Take a trip.

Golf.

Surf.

Work around the house.

Then suddenly your symptoms flare again.

A flare-up doesn't necessarily mean you've created another major disc injury.

But repeated flare-ups may suggest that something continues to aggravate the condition.

If your recovery has become:

Feel better → increase activity → flare up → recover → flare up again

it may be time to figure out what's keeping you in that cycle.

3. Your MRI May Not Tell the Entire Story

An MRI is extremely useful, but an MRI report isn't the patient.

Someone may have a herniated disc along with:

  • Degenerative disc changes
  • Foraminal narrowing
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Facet degeneration
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Other structural findings

There are also people who have disc abnormalities on MRI without symptoms that necessarily correlate with those findings.

That's why the better question isn't simply:

“What does my MRI say?”

It's:

“Do my imaging findings correlate with my symptoms and examination?”

That distinction can influence which treatment options make sense.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Back to Normal Life After a Bulging Disc and Severe Leg Pain

Anthony had already undergone surgery for a bulging disc five years earlier.

When the disc problem returned and began affecting his sciatic nerve, he found The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego after trying other options.

**“I have been dealing with back pain for several years. It got so bad that I had surgery 5 years ago for a bulging disc. About 5 months ago the disc bulged again hitting my sciatic nerve creating pain in my legs that made me want to cry it hurt so bad. After trying so many other options I was fortunate enough to find the spinal decompression and chiropractic center of San Diego. After just a few sessions I noticed a difference. Now after being there for the past few months I'm able to go about my normal life again.

What a blessing it was to find a Dr that genuinely cares and knows how to help people in my situation. Thank you Dr Boelk!”**

Anthony K., San Diego, CA

Anthony's experience is especially relevant for people who are frustrated because they've already tried other options—or even undergone previous back surgery—and are once again dealing with significant disc and sciatic nerve symptoms.

4. Your Treatment Helps—but Only Temporarily

Maybe you've found treatments that provide relief.

The problem is that the relief doesn't last.

You start feeling better.

Then the symptoms return.

So you repeat the treatment.

Eventually you find yourself in a frustrating cycle:

Pain → treatment → relief → pain returns → repeat.

Temporary relief can certainly be useful.

But if you've been doing this for weeks or months without meaningful improvement in your ability to sit, stand, walk, work, exercise, or live normally, it may be worth reevaluating the condition.

The question changes from:

“What makes me feel better today?”

to:

“Why does this keep coming back?”

5. You May Need a Different Approach

There isn't one treatment that works for every herniated disc.

Some patients improve with time and appropriate activity.

Some respond well to rehabilitation.

Some benefit from injections or medication.

Some may be candidates for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

And some genuinely require surgical evaluation.

That's why the objective shouldn't be to sell someone a treatment.

It should be to determine:

“What makes sense for this particular patient?”

What If Physical Therapy Hasn't Helped My Herniated Disc?

Physical therapy can be very helpful for many patients.

But what if you've already gone through weeks of physical therapy and you're still hurting?

That doesn't automatically mean physical therapy was wrong.

And it doesn't automatically mean conservative treatment has failed.

Instead, it may be worth asking why you didn't improve.

Was a spinal nerve still significantly irritated?

Were certain exercises repeatedly provoking symptoms?

Was another structural factor contributing?

Could spinal instability be present?

Does the diagnosis need to be reconsidered?

Would another conservative approach be reasonable?

Those questions should come before simply assuming surgery is the only option remaining.

What If an Epidural Injection Didn't Work?

The same principle applies if you've already had an epidural injection.

Some patients get substantial relief from injections.

Some get temporary relief.

Others experience very little improvement.

If your symptoms return—or never significantly improve—the next question may not be:

“Should I get another injection?”

It may be:

“Why am I still having these symptoms?”

That's the question an evaluation should try to answer.

Could Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Be an Option?

For appropriately selected patients with certain cervical and lumbar disc-related conditions, Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy may be another conservative option.

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC uses the DRX9000® Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression System.

The practice has 7 DRX9000 Spinal Decompression Systems dedicated to Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy.

Based on the number of dedicated DRX9000 systems in the practice, the center is one of the largest known Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression practices in California.

But equipment is only one part of the equation.

Determining whether the patient should actually receive spinal decompression comes first.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not Everyone Is a Candidate for Spinal Decompression

Having back pain or a disc problem doesn't automatically mean Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is appropriate.

Toni came to Dr. Boelk with extensive hardware in her back from previous surgery.

After meeting with Dr. Boelk, she learned that her particular condition wasn't appropriate for his spinal decompression program.

“Very nice Dr. and Honest ! I would definitely recommend anyone who hasn't had metal put in there back in a surgery to go to him and give his program a shot. I believe it would definitely help. Just not in my personal case. As I have a lot of hardware in my back. But I'm glad I took the time to meet with him. It was very informative all around.”

Toni W., Lake Elsinore, CA

That's exactly why the evaluation comes first.

The purpose isn't to find a reason to put every patient on a DRX9000.

It's to determine what's causing your symptoms, whether Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is appropriate for your particular condition, and what your next step should be if it isn't.

When Should You Stop Waiting for Your Herniated Disc to Get Better?

There isn't a magic number of days or weeks.

But if you're not seeing meaningful progress, it may be time to have the condition reevaluated.

Especially if:

  • Your sciatica keeps returning
  • Pain continues traveling down your leg or arm
  • Numbness or tingling isn't improving
  • You're having difficulty sitting
  • Walking or standing remains limited
  • You're unable to exercise normally
  • Your ability to work is being affected
  • Physical therapy hasn't produced the improvement you expected
  • An injection provided little or temporary relief
  • You've been told surgery may be next
  • You're tired of living around your symptoms

At that point, you may not need another random treatment.

You may need a better understanding of why you're not getting better.
