Why Does Sitting Make Sciatica Worse? – San Diego, CA

Why Does Sitting Make Sciatica Worse? – San Diego, CA

One of the most common things patients with sciatica say when they come into our office is:

“I can walk better than I can sit.”

For many people, sitting becomes miserable.

Some patients can only tolerate a few minutes in the car before the burning starts traveling down the leg. Others constantly shift positions at work, sit crooked to one side, or avoid long drives entirely because the pain becomes unbearable.

In severe cases, patients may feel:

  • burning pain into the glute or calf
  • numbness or tingling into the foot
  • sharp pain when standing up
  • pressure in the low back
  • weakness in the leg
  • severe tightness after sitting
  • pain that worsens later in the day

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy Boelk, DC has spent nearly 20 years helping patients suffering from severe sciatica, disc injuries, and chronic low back pain avoid unnecessary injections and surgery whenever possible.

Dr. Boelk is a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor, Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist, founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy, and has personally performed over 100,000 spinal decompression treatments using the DRX9000 system.

Many patients who come to our office have already tried:

  • stretching
  • massage
  • medications
  • physical therapy
  • chiropractic adjustments
  • injections
  • general traction
  • rest

Some improve temporarily, but many continue struggling because the true source of the sciatic irritation has not been properly identified.

Why Sitting Places So Much Stress on the Low Back

Most people assume sitting is “rest” for the spine.

In reality, prolonged sitting can place tremendous pressure on the spinal discs — especially when posture begins collapsing forward.

For patients with:

  • disc bulges
  • herniated discs
  • disc extrusions
  • degenerative disc changes
  • nerve irritation

…sitting may significantly aggravate symptoms.

This is especially true if patients:

  • sit slouched forward
  • spend hours driving
  • work at a desk all day
  • sit on soft couches
  • repeatedly bend forward throughout the day

For some patients, the spinal discs are already irritated and sensitive. Prolonged sitting may increase compression around the injured area and further irritate the nearby nerve root.

This is one reason why some patients feel:

  • better walking
  • worse driving
  • stiff standing up
  • severe pain getting out of the car
  • more burning further down the leg while sitting

Sciatica Is Often More Than “Tight Muscles”

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding sciatica is believing the pain is only coming from tight hamstrings, glutes, or piriformis muscles.

While muscular tightness can absolutely contribute, many severe cases involve irritation coming directly from the spinal discs and nerves themselves.

This is why some people stretch aggressively for months and still do not improve.

In some situations, certain stretches may actually worsen irritated discs or inflamed nerves.

Proper diagnosis matters tremendously.

At our office, one of the first goals is determining:

  • whether the disc is involved
  • whether nerve compression is present
  • what movements worsen symptoms
  • what movements centralize symptoms
  • whether instability exists
  • whether the patient is a candidate for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD)

Not every patient qualifies for decompression treatment, and not every case should be treated the same way.

Real Patient Experience

“For the first time in 10 years, I am totally pain free. My sciatica is gone and I have no more back pain! I've tried other chiropractic procedures, acupuncture, pain killing drugs, and other type therapies that just did not work. I was one step before back surgery, until I discovered Dr. Boelk's therapy and his procedure, and it's a miracle! My office visits were always so relaxing and comfortable, there was never any pain involved with the therapy. Dr. Boelk and Patty are so welcoming and warm and ready to explain everything that's going on. They both take such good care of you! Thank you Dr. Boelk and Patty!”

Many patients are surprised to learn that their symptoms may actually be coming from chronic spinal compression and disc irritation rather than simply muscle tightness alone.

Why MRI Findings Matter

Not every MRI finding causes pain.

However, certain findings are commonly associated with sciatic nerve irritation, including:

  • disc bulges
  • disc protrusions
  • disc extrusions
  • nerve root compression
  • loss of disc height
  • degenerative disc disease

This is one reason proper evaluation matters.

At our office, Dr. Boelk looks at:

  • symptom patterns
  • movement responses
  • posture
  • neurological findings
  • imaging when available
  • sitting tolerance
  • walking tolerance
  • directional preference

The goal is not simply treating symptoms randomly, but determining what may actually be driving the condition.

How Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) Works

At our office, we exclusively use the DRX9000 spinal decompression system.

Unlike generalized traction, true Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression uses carefully controlled decompression forces and customized positioning to help reduce pressure on injured spinal discs and irritated nerves.

The goal is to help:

  • reduce disc pressure
  • reduce nerve irritation
  • improve circulation
  • improve mobility
  • reduce muscle guarding
  • create a better healing environment

Patients frequently travel from:

  • Arizona
  • Nevada
  • Oregon
  • Alaska
  • Mexico
  • The United Kingdom
  • Spain

…to seek out Dr. Boelk’s expertise treating severe disc and sciatic nerve conditions.

Our office currently has seven DRX9000 spinal decompression tables and has become known for helping many chronic and severe cases.

Real Patient Experience

“I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Boelk and his staff at the Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic Center of San Diego. They have a great protocol and the best decompression machines. I’ve been to other places with sub par machines and didn’t get any benefit. Dr. Boelk is very attentive and cares about each person, you can see it in how he interacts with everyone. Been undergoing treatment for about 12 sessions now and the sciatica is gone and I’m almost back to normal, didn’t think it would ever heal but even after the first session I had tremendous relief and could sleep mostly pain free for the first time in months. Definitely worth the investment! Thank you!”

Why Passive Treatment Alone Usually Is Not Enough

One of the biggest mistakes patients make is relying entirely on passive treatment.

Even when decompression successfully reduces pressure on irritated nerves, many patients still need to address:

  • hip mobility limitations
  • weak glutes
  • poor posture
  • core weakness
  • faulty bending mechanics
  • chronic compensation patterns

This is why Dr. Boelk integrates active rehabilitation strategies whenever appropriate.

Long-term relief often requires:

  • improving movement quality
  • improving spinal stability
  • improving hip function
  • reducing repetitive stress on injured discs

The goal is not simply helping patients feel better temporarily — it is helping them move better long term.

Real Patient Experience

“There is not enough room to explain the relief Dr. Boelk has brought to me and my entire family. I found him after a year of sciatic pain. Couldn't play the sports I loved, no hockey, golf or surfing. The pain shooting from my hip to my left foot was to the point of unbearable. I had been visiting chiropractors since I was 18, temporary relief, but nothing consistent. Acupuncture helped a bit, physical therapy was unmanageable. I couldn't get a solid night sleep and didn't care to go on. But Then I met the Dr! I tell people regularly, he saved my life.”

What To Do If Sitting Is Triggering Your Sciatica

If sitting consistently worsens your symptoms:

  • avoid prolonged sitting when possible
  • stand and walk periodically
  • avoid aggressive forward bending
  • avoid forcing painful stretches
  • pay attention to positions that centralize symptoms
  • seek proper evaluation

Many patients continue suffering for months or years simply because they never truly identify the underlying source of the nerve irritation.
