Why Can I Barely Walk Because of Sciatica? | Mission Valley, CA

Why Can I Barely Walk Because of Sciatica? | Mission Valley, CA

When Sciatica Becomes So Severe That Walking Is Difficult

Sciatica can range from an occasional annoyance to debilitating pain that makes even short walks feel impossible. For some people, simply getting out of bed, walking across a parking lot, or standing in line at the grocery store becomes a daily struggle.

When this happens, it's natural to wonder:

  • Is the nerve permanently damaged?

  • Is surgery the only option?

  • Why is the pain so much worse when walking?

  • Is it safe to continue being active?

These are some of the most common questions patients ask Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC during their initial consultation.

One important fact to understand is that the severity of the pain does not always reflect the severity of the underlying condition. Some patients with extremely painful sciatica improve with conservative treatment, while others with less pain may have significant nerve compression that requires prompt medical attention.

The key is identifying what is causing the sciatic nerve to become irritated in the first place.

Patient Success Story

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Abel T. — San Diego, CA

"I was dealing with severe back pain that made it difficult to sleep, along with intense sciatica that radiated from my lower back down my leg following an accident.

When I met with Dr. Cassidy Boelk, he performed a thorough evaluation and determined that I was a good candidate for treatment.

The results were remarkable.

After just two spinal decompression sessions, my sciatic pain was gone, allowing us to focus on correcting the underlying cause of the problem. I completed 24 treatments and then progressed into rehabilitation exercises designed to strengthen my core and help prevent future flare-ups.

Today, I'm sleeping better, walking comfortably, becoming active again, and enjoying life much more than before. My experience has been excellent from start to finish."

Why Walking Can Make Sciatica Worse

Although the pain is usually felt in the buttock or leg, sciatica often begins in the lower back.

The sciatic nerve is commonly irritated because of conditions such as:

  • Herniated lumbar discs

  • Bulging discs

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Foraminal stenosis

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • Arthritic changes around the spinal joints

When a person stands or walks, the position of the lumbar spine changes. Depending on the underlying condition, those changes may increase pressure on an already irritated spinal nerve.

This explains why many patients report they can sit for a period of time but struggle to walk through a shopping center or around the neighborhood.

Others experience the exact opposite, feeling worse while sitting and somewhat better once they begin moving.

These symptom patterns often provide valuable diagnostic clues that help determine the underlying cause of the sciatica.

Sciatica Is a Symptom—Not the Diagnosis

One of the biggest misconceptions about sciatica is that it is a diagnosis.

It is not.

Sciatica simply describes pain traveling along the sciatic nerve. It does not explain why that nerve has become irritated.

Two people may both have pain traveling down the same leg, yet one may have a large disc herniation while the other has severe spinal stenosis. Although the symptoms may sound similar, the treatment recommendations may be very different.

That is why Dr. Boelk believes every patient should receive a thorough history, orthopedic and neurological examination, and careful review of any available imaging before treatment recommendations are made.

Treating symptoms without identifying the underlying cause often leads to frustration and unnecessary delays in recovery.

Is Surgery Always Necessary?

Fortunately, no.

Many patients assume that severe sciatica automatically means surgery is inevitable. In reality, many cases improve with appropriate conservative care.

However, there are situations where surgery may be the most appropriate recommendation, particularly when there is progressive neurological weakness, significant instability, cauda equina syndrome, or persistent symptoms that have not responded to appropriate conservative treatment.

The goal is not to avoid surgery at all costs.

The goal is to determine which treatment is most appropriate for each individual patient.

Why Patients Choose Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC

Choosing the right provider for sciatica is about much more than simply finding someone who offers spinal decompression.

The experience of the doctor evaluating the patient, understanding the diagnosis, determining candidacy, and monitoring progress throughout treatment can make a significant difference.

For more than 22 years, Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC has focused almost exclusively on treating patients suffering from disc injuries, sciatica, neck pain, and nerve-related conditions. During that time, he has performed more than 100,000 spinal decompression treatments, making his office one of the most experienced spinal decompression centers in California.

Patients frequently travel from Mission Valley, throughout San Diego County, and even outside California because they are looking for an experienced doctor who specializes in conservative treatment for disc-related spinal conditions.

More Than Just a Decompression Table

Many people are surprised to learn that successful treatment involves far more than lying on a decompression table.

Every patient responds differently.

The correct treatment plan depends on numerous factors, including:

  • The patient's diagnosis

  • MRI and X-ray findings

  • Neurological examination

  • Severity and duration of symptoms

  • Previous treatments

  • Overall health

  • Progress throughout care

For some patients, spinal decompression may be an excellent option.

For others, another conservative treatment—or even referral to a spine surgeon—may be the better recommendation.

One of the reasons many patients appreciate Dr. Boelk's approach is that he does not believe everyone is a candidate for spinal decompression. If he believes another treatment option is more appropriate, he will explain why.

A Conservative Approach Whenever Appropriate

Many patients seeking care have already tried medications, physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage, injections, or home exercise programs before scheduling an appointment.

Some have experienced temporary improvement.

Others have found little or no relief.

Rather than simply repeating previous treatments, Dr. Boelk begins by determining why the sciatic nerve is irritated.

That evaluation often includes reviewing previous MRI studies, obtaining weight-bearing digital X-rays when appropriate, performing a detailed orthopedic and neurological examination, and carefully correlating the patient's symptoms with the imaging findings.

Only after understanding the complete clinical picture are treatment recommendations made.

Can Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Help?

For properly selected patients, non-surgical spinal decompression may help reduce pressure within injured spinal discs and around irritated spinal nerves.

The goal is to create an environment that allows the irritated tissues to heal while reducing nerve compression and improving function.

Potential goals of treatment may include:

  • Reducing pressure on irritated spinal nerves

  • Decreasing radiating leg pain

  • Improving walking tolerance

  • Helping patients return to normal daily activities

  • Improving overall spinal function

  • Progressing into rehabilitation exercises once symptoms improve

However, spinal decompression is not appropriate for every condition that causes sciatica.

That is why an accurate diagnosis is always the first priority.

Real Patient Experience

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jayson Yavorsky – San Diego, CA

"Since my own recovery, I have referred my wife, daughter, mother, father, numerous friends, and many clients to his office. Every one of them has thanked me for the recommendation. Most recently, a firefighter friend of mine who was suffering from severe sciatica began treatment and is now making tremendous progress.

If you are considering surgery, I strongly encourage you to have Dr. Boelk evaluate your condition first.

What I respect most is his honesty. If he believes you are not a candidate or that another option would be better, he will tell you.

I trust him with my life and with my back."
