WHY IS MY BACK SO STIFF EVERY MORNING? – SAN DIEGO, CA
WHY IS MY BACK SO STIFF EVERY MORNING? – SAN DIEGO, CA
Do You Wake Up Feeling Like You're 30 Years Older Than You Really Are?
You roll out of bed.
Your lower back feels stiff.
It hurts to bend over.
Putting on your shoes and socks feels like a workout.
You find yourself slowly shuffling around the house for 20, 30, or even 60 minutes before your back finally "loosens up."
Sound familiar?
If so, you're not alone.
Morning low back stiffness is one of the most common complaints I hear from patients at The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego.
Many people assume it's "just getting older."
Others think they simply slept wrong.
While those things can certainly contribute, persistent morning stiffness is often your body's way of telling you something deeper may be going on.
It could be a disc injury.
Degenerative disc disease.
Arthritic changes.
Facet joint irritation.
Spinal stenosis.
Or another spinal condition that deserves a proper evaluation instead of simply hoping it goes away.
"I Never Ended Up Needing Surgery..."
One of my favorite patient stories comes from Amanda.
She wrote:
**"Last year, I spent three months constantly going back and forth between doctor's appointments and urgent care. The pain was unbearable—I was taking medication regularly just to get through the day. Getting out of bed was excruciating, and walking or standing felt like torture. Every step filled me with dread.
In December, my doctor finally ordered an MRI. That's when I learned I had an extruded disc pressing on my L5 nerve, which affects the leg and foot. My doctor scheduled two follow-up appointments: one for pain management (spinal injections), and another to evaluate me for surgery.
Then I discovered spinal decompression therapy. I was thrilled to find a non-invasive alternative.
I never ended up needing either of those appointments.
Now, I'm walking regularly, standing up straight—something I couldn't do before. When I first sought help, I was so hunched over that I had to use a cane just to move forward. Because of the pain, I hadn't exercised in months. But now, I'm doing a program called 75 Hard which requires not one but two 45-minute workouts every day, and I've even gotten back to lifting weights.
I'm so thankful I found this place. Dr. Boelk and the staff are incredibly friendly and polite. The environment is relaxing, and I actually looked forward to my visits."**
Stories like Amanda's are exactly why I've dedicated nearly two decades to helping patients with chronic neck and back pain.

Why Does Your Back Feel Worse In The Morning?
There isn't one single answer.
Several different conditions can produce morning stiffness.
One of the most common is a spinal disc injury.
Your spinal discs act like cushions between the vertebrae.
When those discs become damaged, inflamed, or begin degenerating, they may become painful when you first begin moving after lying in one position for several hours.
Other possibilities include:
-
Degenerative Disc Disease
-
Disc Bulges
-
Herniated Discs
-
Facet Joint Irritation
-
Arthritis
-
Spinal Stenosis
-
Muscle guarding
-
Ligament injuries
This is why simply treating everyone the same rarely works.
The first step is determining why your back is stiff.
Only then can you create the right treatment plan.
Three Things I Commonly Recommend
1. Start With A Hot Shower
Heat helps many people relax tight muscles surrounding the spine.
While it doesn't fix the underlying cause, it often helps patients move more comfortably before beginning their day.
2. Avoid Sitting Right Away
One mistake I frequently see is someone getting out of bed...
...then immediately sitting at the breakfast table.
Then sitting in the car.
Then sitting at work.
For many people with disc-related back pain, prolonged sitting increases pressure through the lumbar discs.
Instead, spend the first 45–60 minutes moving around the house if possible.
Take your shower.
Prepare breakfast.
Walk around.
Give your back a chance to warm up before prolonged sitting.
3. Perform Gentle Mobility Exercises
Two of my favorite morning mobility exercises are exactly the ones demonstrated in the accompanying video:
• Pelvic Tilts
• Gentle Knee Rotations
The key is simple...
Move.
Don't force.
Don't push through sharp pain.
Stay just shy of pain.
Repeat the movements several times throughout the day if they continue making your back feel looser.
If, however, your symptoms begin traveling further down your leg, become sharper, or you develop increasing numbness, tingling, or weakness, stop and have your spine evaluated.
"Trust Him...He'll Tell You If You're Not A Candidate."
One review I love sharing doesn't come from someone we treated.
It comes from someone we didn't.
"I found this terrific practice on social media... After an honest and forthright conversation, we both determined surgery was my only option to correct my back issues. I will return as a customer when the time is right." — Jeff J., Tucson, AZ
That's important.
Not everyone who walks through our doors is a candidate for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.
If I believe surgery, injections, physical therapy, or another specialist is a better option, I'll tell you.
I'd much rather earn your trust than recommend care that isn't appropriate.

Another Patient's Experience
Anthony shared:
**"I have been dealing with back pain for several years... it got so bad that I had surgery for a bulging disc. About five months ago the disc bulged again, hitting my sciatic nerve and creating pain in my legs that made me want to cry. After trying so many other options, I was fortunate enough to find The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego.
After just a few sessions I noticed a difference. Now I'm able to go about my normal life again. What a blessing it was to find a doctor who genuinely cares and knows how to help people in my situation."**
