WHY DOES MY SCIATICA HURT MORE IN THE MORNING? IN SAN DIEGO, CA

WHY DOES MY SCIATICA HURT MORE IN THE MORNING? IN SAN DIEGO, CA

Understanding Morning Sciatica, Disc Injuries, Stiffness, Numbness & Why Getting Out Of Bed Can Be So Difficult

One of the most common things patients tell Dr. Cassidy Boelk is:

"Mornings are the worst."

Many describe:

✔ Increased Sciatica When Getting Out Of Bed

✔ Difficulty Standing Up Straight

✔ Burning Leg Pain First Thing In The Morning

✔ Foot Numbness Upon Waking

✔ Stiffness In The Lower Back

✔ Increased Pain While Brushing Their Teeth

✔ Pain When Putting On Shoes Or Socks

For some patients, symptoms improve after moving around.

For others, the first hour of the day can be miserable.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

In fact, morning pain is extremely common among patients suffering from disc injuries, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, and certain types of nerve irritation.

The good news?

Understanding why this happens may help you make better decisions and potentially reduce aggravation first thing in the morning.

"LAST YEAR THE PAIN WAS UNBEARABLE"

Last year, I spent three months constantly going back and forth between doctor's appointments and urgent care. The pain was unbearable—I was taking medication regularly just to get through the day. Getting out of bed was excruciating, and walking or standing felt like torture. Every step filled me with dread.

In December, my doctor finally ordered an MRI. That's when I learned I had an extruded disc pressing on my L5 nerve, which affects the leg and foot. My doctor scheduled two follow-up appointments: one for pain management (spinal injections), and another to evaluate me for surgery.

Then I discovered spinal decompression therapy. I was thrilled to find a non-invasive alternative.

I never ended up needing either of those appointments.

Now, I'm walking regularly, standing up straight—something I couldn't do before. When I first sought help, I was so hunched over that I had to use a cane just to move forward. Because of the pain, I hadn't exercised in months. But now, I'm doing a program called 75 Hard which requires not one but two 45-minute workouts per day, and I've even gotten back to lifting weights.

I'm so thankful I found this place. It's conveniently located near my work, which makes it easy to fit sessions into my lunch break. Dr. Boelk and the staff are incredibly friendly and polite—it's always a pleasure to come in.

The environment is so relaxing that I look forward to each visit. I truly thank God for leading me to this alternative. It's made such a difference in my life.

WHY SCIATICA IS OFTEN WORSE IN THE MORNING

One reason many patients experience increased pain first thing in the morning involves the discs themselves.

During the day:

  • Walking

  • Standing

  • Working

  • Exercising

place normal compressive forces on the spine.

During sleep, something different happens.

As pressure decreases overnight, spinal discs naturally absorb fluid.

This is one reason many people are actually slightly taller when they wake up in the morning than when they go to bed.

For patients with healthy discs, this usually isn't a problem.

For patients with disc injuries, herniations, bulges, or nerve irritation, that increased fluid content may temporarily increase pressure within an already sensitive area.

This is one reason some people notice:

✔ More Sciatica

✔ More Stiffness

✔ More Leg Pain

✔ More Difficulty Standing Upright

during the first hour of the day.

WHY BENDING FIRST THING IN THE MORNING CAN BE A BAD IDEA

This is one of the most important things many patients have never been told.

For some disc patients, repeated bending shortly after waking may place additional stress on already sensitive tissues.

Think about what many people do first thing in the morning:

  • Put on socks

  • Tie shoes

  • Pick things up

  • Load the dishwasher

  • Make the bed

For some individuals with disc injuries, these activities may be surprisingly aggravating.

This doesn't mean bending is bad.

It simply means that certain patients may benefit from being more cautious during the first part of the day.

5 THINGS SOME SCIATICA PATIENTS MAY TRY IN THE MORNING

⚠️ These suggestions are not intended to replace a proper evaluation.

1. Give Yourself A Few Minutes Before Bending Repeatedly

Allow your body time to wake up and begin moving.

2. Take A Short Walk

Many patients notice symptoms improve after gentle movement.

3. Stay Hydrated

Healthy discs depend heavily on fluid exchange.

4. Use Good Mechanics When Putting On Shoes

Avoid unnecessary twisting and bending if those movements consistently aggravate symptoms.

5. Pay Attention To Patterns

The more you understand what triggers symptoms, the easier it becomes to make informed decisions.

"I'VE BEEN TO OTHER PLACES WITH SUB PAR MACHINES"

I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Boelk and his staff at the Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic Center of San Diego. They have a great protocol and the best decompression machines. I've been to other places with sub par machines and didn't get any benefit.

Dr. Boelk is very attentive and cares about each person, you can see it in how he interacts with everyone. Been undergoing treatment for about 12 sessions now and the sciatica is gone and I'm almost back to normal, didn't think it would ever heal but even after the first session I had tremendous relief and could sleep mostly pain free for the first time in months.

Definitely worth the investment! Thank you!

WHAT IF MY SCIATICA FEELS BETTER FOR A FEW DAYS, THEN COMES BACK?

Many patients become discouraged when symptoms improve and then suddenly return.

The reality is that recovery is often not a straight line.

Temporary flare-ups can occur for many reasons.

NOT EVERY PATIENT IS A CANDIDATE

One thing many patients appreciate about Dr. Boelk is honesty.

Not every patient qualifies.

Not every patient can avoid surgery.

And not every patient should undergo spinal decompression treatment.

One consultation patient shared:

"Very nice Dr. and Honest! I would definitely recommend anyone who hasn't had metal put in there back in a surgery to go to him and give his program a shot. I believe it would definitely help. Just not in my personal case. As I have a lot of hardware in my back. But I'm glad I took the time to meet with him. It was very informative all around."
