3 Things I Would Stop Doing If I Personally Had Sciatica

If I personally woke up tomorrow with sciatica, burning leg pain, numbness, tingling, or pain shooting down my leg, there are a few things I would immediately evaluate.

After helping patients with chronic disc-related neck and back conditions for nearly 20 years, I've noticed certain patterns that show up again and again in people suffering from recurring sciatica.

While every case is different and not all sciatica has the same cause, these are 3 things I would seriously consider if I were dealing with sciatica myself.

1. I Would Stop Sitting For Long Periods Without Breaks

One of the most common complaints I hear from sciatica patients is:

"Driving kills me."

"I can't sit through a movie."

"I have to constantly shift positions."

For many people, prolonged sitting may increase pressure on already irritated discs, joints, and nerves within the lower spine.

This is why some people notice:

  • Increased leg pain while driving

  • Burning sensations down the leg

  • Numbness or tingling in the foot

  • Increased low back pain after sitting

  • Difficulty getting out of a chair

That doesn't mean sitting is harmful for everyone.

However, if I personally had sciatica, I would pay close attention to whether prolonged sitting consistently worsened my symptoms.

I would also make an effort to:

✅ Stand regularly

✅ Take short walking breaks

✅ Avoid remaining in one position for hours at a time

Sometimes small changes in daily habits can make a significant difference.

2. I Would Stop Aggressively Stretching Through Leg Pain

This may surprise some people.

Many patients assume that because something feels tight, they should stretch it harder.

Unfortunately, that isn't always true.

In some cases, aggressive stretching may further irritate an already sensitive nerve.

Examples may include:

  • Aggressive toe touching

  • Forceful hamstring stretching

  • Stretching into significant pain

  • Twisting stretches that increase symptoms

If I personally had sciatica, I would pay close attention to what happened after stretching.

If pain traveled further down my leg...

If numbness increased...

If tingling became worse...

I would view that as important information rather than simply trying to push through it.

One of the goals of treatment should be reducing nerve irritation—not constantly provoking it.

3. I Would Stop Ignoring Symptoms That Continue To Progress

This is perhaps the most important point.

Sciatica is not a diagnosis.

Sciatica is a symptom.

The underlying cause may involve:

  • A disc bulge

  • A herniated disc

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Foraminal stenosis

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Nerve compression

  • Other spinal conditions

Many patients spend months—or even years—trying to manage symptoms without ever identifying the source of the problem.

If I personally had sciatica, I would want to understand why.

Particularly if I noticed:

  • Increasing numbness

  • Increasing weakness

  • Pain traveling further down the leg

  • More frequent flare-ups

  • Reduced sitting tolerance

  • Symptoms interfering with daily activities

The sooner the underlying cause is identified, the sooner informed decisions can be made regarding treatment options.

Why Does Sciatica Keep Coming Back?

One of the most frustrating aspects of sciatica is that symptoms often improve temporarily before returning.

This frequently occurs because the symptoms have been treated, but the underlying source of irritation remains.

Patients often tell us:

  • "The injection helped for a while."

  • "The medication worked temporarily."

  • "The pain went away, then came right back."

  • "I felt better until I started sitting again."

When the underlying cause remains unresolved, recurring flare-ups can become common.

This is why determining the source of the problem is often just as important as treating the symptoms themselves.

Not Every Sciatica Patient Is A Candidate

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, one of the first things we determine is whether someone is actually a candidate for care.

Not every patient qualifies.

Not every condition responds to the same treatment.

That is why every patient undergoes a thorough consultation, examination, and review of any available imaging before treatment recommendations are made.

If we do not believe a patient is a candidate, we will tell them.
