Sciatica Relief at Home – San Diego, CA

Sciatica Relief at Home – San Diego, CA

3 Movements That May Help

Sciatica can make everyday life miserable.

Many patients dealing with sciatica describe:

  • burning pain down the leg
  • numbness or tingling
  • pain sitting or driving
  • difficulty sleeping
  • flare-ups after bending or lifting
  • tightness into the glute or calf
  • pain that repeatedly comes back

Others say:

“I just want SOMETHING that helps calm it down.”

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy Boelk DC regularly evaluates patients suffering from:

  • severe sciatica
  • disc bulges
  • herniated discs
  • nerve irritation
  • burning leg pain
  • sitting intolerance
  • recurring flare-ups

Many patients come to the office after trying:

  • stretching programs
  • injections
  • physical therapy
  • chiropractic treatment
  • massage therapy
  • medications

without lasting improvement.

As a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor, Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist, founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy, and a doctor who has personally performed over 100,000 spinal decompression treatments, Dr. Boelk focuses heavily on helping patients understand whether spinal disc pressure and nerve irritation may actually be contributing to symptoms.

“I Had Terrible Sciatica and Could Barely Sleep”

“I herniated my L4-L5 disc. The MRI showed it was 0.9 centimeters out of place and they were surprised I was even walking.

I had terrible sciatica and could barely sleep.

I went to a different decompression clinic first, but they had inferior tables and I actually got worse.

After wasting a bunch of money there, I came here.

The first night after treatment I was able to sleep throughout the night without pain.

After about three months of treatment, I went to Italy and I was good to go. I was able to surf again, hike again, and get back to normal activities.

These guys are the best. The staff is amazing and everyone really cares about you.”

One of the most important things patients should understand is:

not all sciatica is the same.

Some cases involve:

  • disc bulges
  • disc herniations
  • severe inflammation
  • nerve irritation
  • instability
  • movement dysfunction

…which means certain movements may help SOME people while aggravating others.

That is why proper evaluation matters.

1. Gentle Standing Back Bends

For SOME patients, prolonged sitting and forward bending may aggravate irritated spinal discs and nerves.

Gentle standing back bends may sometimes help reduce irritation by temporarily reducing stress on certain structures.

Tips:

  • move slowly
  • avoid forcing the motion
  • perform gently and controlled
  • stop immediately if symptoms worsen significantly down the leg

Some patients notice:

  • reduced tightness
  • reduced leg pain
  • improved standing tolerance

Others may not tolerate this movement well at all.

2. Lateral Shift / Leaning Away From the Pain

Some patients develop a noticeable shift or lean due to nerve irritation and muscle guarding.

In certain cases, gently leaning away from the painful side may sometimes help reduce irritation.

This movement is commonly used for specific directional preference patterns.

Important:

⚠️ This is NOT appropriate for everyone.

If symptoms:

  • worsen significantly
  • travel further down the leg
  • increase sharply

…the movement should be stopped.

This is one reason individualized assessment is so important.

3. Relaxed Prone Lying (Laying on Your Stomach)

For some patients dealing with disc-related sciatica, simply laying relaxed on the stomach for several minutes may sometimes help calm symptoms.

This should be:

  • relaxed
  • passive
  • comfortable

NOT:

  • an aggressive cobra stretch
  • forceful extension
  • painful pushing

Many patients dealing with prolonged sitting intolerance find this position temporarily relieving.

Warning Signs You Should Stop and Get Evaluated

Certain symptoms should NOT simply be “stretched through.”

Seek evaluation if you experience:

  • worsening numbness
  • increasing weakness
  • pain traveling further down the leg
  • loss of balance
  • severe progressive pain
  • bowel or bladder changes

These symptoms may indicate more significant nerve irritation or compression.

“The Pain Shooting Into My Leg Was Unbearable”

“There is not enough room to explain the relief Dr. Boelk has brought to me and my entire family. I found him after a year of sciatic pain. Couldn't play the sports I loved, no hockey, golf or surfing. The pain shooting from my hip to my left foot was to the point of unbearable.

I had been visiting chiropractors since I was 18, temporary relief, but nothing consistent. Acupuncture helped a bit, physical therapy was unmanageable. I couldn't get a solid night sleep and didn't care to go on. But Then I met the Dr! I tell people regularly, he saved my life.

It was a regular routine of adjustments and exercises. A change of life patterns but 110% worth every effort.”

Why Proper Evaluation Matters

Many patients struggling with recurring sciatica continue chasing:

  • temporary relief
  • random stretches
  • generalized exercises
  • short-term symptom reduction

…without ever determining what is actually causing the problem.

At our office, Dr. Boelk evaluates:

  • sitting tolerance
  • posture
  • spinal loading
  • movement mechanics
  • spinal stability
  • hip mobility
  • MRI findings if available

to help determine whether:

  • disc pressure
  • nerve irritation
  • instability
  • movement dysfunction

may actually be contributing to symptoms.
