Neck Pain Treatment Without Surgery in San Diego, CA

Neck Pain Treatment Without Surgery in San Diego, CA

Still Dealing With Neck Pain After Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, Injections or Medication?

If your neck pain keeps coming back—or you've developed pain, numbness, tingling or weakness traveling into your shoulder, arm, hand or fingers—the problem may not simply be “tight muscles.”

A bulging or herniated cervical disc, degenerative disc disease, foraminal narrowing or an irritated cervical nerve may be contributing to your symptoms.

And if the underlying problem isn't being properly identified and addressed, it's easy to get stuck in a cycle:

Pain → treatment → temporary relief → pain returns → repeat.

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC has spent more than two decades working with difficult neck, back and disc-related conditions.

Many of the patients who seek out Dr. Boelk aren't looking for their first treatment.

They're looking for an answer after the other things they've tried haven't provided the relief they were hoping for.

Before You Consider Neck Surgery, Find Out If You're a Candidate for a Non-Surgical Approach

Not everyone qualifies for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

That's exactly why we offer a No-Charge Consultation.

Bring your MRI if you have one. Sit down with Dr. Boelk. Let him review your case and determine whether you're someone he believes he can help.

“I Was Told Surgery Was Likely My Next Option.”

One of our patients, Justine Lai, came to Dr. Boelk after being diagnosed with severe cervical disc bulging along with dizziness, neck pain, numbness and tingling into her arms and hands.

She had already tried multiple chiropractors, traction machines and pain-management specialists before being told that surgery was likely her next option.

After beginning a treatment program specific to her condition, Justine reported that her pain decreased from a 7/10 to a 3/10 during her initial intensive treatment and eventually to 1–2/10 with maintenance care.

She continues to see Dr. Boelk today and describes finding our office as “one of the best healthcare decisions I've ever made.”

Why Does Neck Pain Sometimes Travel Into the Shoulder, Arm or Hand?

This is where understanding what is actually causing your pain becomes important.

Your cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae separated by discs that provide movement, cushioning and space for the nerves that eventually travel into your shoulders, arms and hands.

When a cervical disc becomes injured, degenerates, bulges or herniates, it can contribute to inflammation or decreased space around a cervical nerve.

That can produce symptoms far away from the neck itself.

You may experience:

  • Persistent or recurring neck pain

  • Pain between or around the shoulder blades

  • Pain traveling into one shoulder or arm

  • Numbness or tingling into the arm, hand or fingers

  • Burning or electrical sensations

  • A feeling of heaviness in the arm

  • Weakness or changes in grip strength

  • Symptoms that worsen while sitting, driving or working at a computer

  • Difficulty sleeping because of neck or arm pain

This is why simply treating where it hurts doesn't always solve the problem.

If a cervical nerve is irritated because of a disc or foraminal problem, repeatedly working on the muscles without understanding the underlying spinal mechanics may provide only temporary relief.

What If You've Already Tried Chiropractic or Physical Therapy?

This is one of the most common questions we hear.

“I've already tried chiropractic. Why would your office be any different?”

Because our primary focus isn't simply adjusting your neck.

And Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is not the same thing as traditional traction.

Dr. Boelk's practice has developed around evaluating and treating appropriate patients with difficult disc-related conditions using advanced Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression protocols combined with rehabilitation and other care when clinically appropriate.

Many patients come to us specifically because they've already tried:

  • Traditional chiropractic adjustments

  • Physical therapy

  • Massage therapy

  • Stretching

  • Home exercise programs

  • Cervical traction

  • Anti-inflammatory medications

  • Muscle relaxers

  • Pain medication

  • Epidural or other spinal injections

Some improved temporarily.

Others didn't improve at all.

And some have reached the point where they're being told they may simply have to live with the problem—or start considering surgery.

That's often when they find us.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Is NOT Traditional Traction

This distinction matters.

Dr. Boelk does not simply strap patients onto a basic traction table and “stretch” their neck.

Our office exclusively uses the DRX9000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression system.

The purpose of treatment is to apply controlled decompressive forces to appropriate spinal segments according to the patient's condition and treatment protocol.

Dr. Boelk has spent more than 20 years working with Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression, refining how patients are evaluated, selected and treated.

In fact, he now trains other doctors in Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression protocols and techniques through the Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Training Academy, which he founded at his private practice in San Diego.

Why Patients With Difficult Neck Problems Seek Out Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC

There are plenty of places in San Diego to get your neck adjusted.

That's not why patients travel to see Dr. Boelk.

Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC is a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor and Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist who has dedicated more than two decades to helping patients with difficult spinal conditions pursue non-surgical solutions.

His understanding of spinal rehabilitation is also personal.

After suffering significant spinal injuries himself, Dr. Boelk spent thousands of hours researching, rehabilitating and learning how to keep his own spine functioning well enough to remain active.

That experience ultimately shaped the way he treats patients today.

Dr. Boelk has now performed and supervised tens of thousands of spinal decompression treatments and has helped patients for more than 20 years explore options for avoiding spinal surgery when clinically appropriate.

His San Diego practice is also home to seven Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression systems—four lumbar and three cervical—and exclusively utilizes DRX9000 technology.

Patients have sought out his expertise from throughout San Diego County and Southern California, as well as from other states and countries, including Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom and Spain.

But experience and technology aren't the most important part of the process.

Patient selection is.

Not Everyone With Neck Pain Should Receive Spinal Decompression

One of the biggest mistakes in treating neck pain is assuming that everyone with similar symptoms has the same problem.

They don't.

Two patients can both say:

“My neck hurts and my hand is numb.”

One may have a cervical disc problem that makes them an excellent candidate for decompression.

The other may have a condition that requires additional diagnostic testing, medical management or surgical evaluation.

That's why Dr. Boelk doesn't recommend decompression simply because someone has neck pain.

The first goal is to answer:

What is causing your symptoms?

Is your condition mechanically appropriate for decompression?

Is your spine stable?

Is there neurological involvement?

Is there anything suggesting that you should NOT receive decompression?

And most importantly—does Dr. Boelk believe you're actually a good candidate?

If the answer is no, he will tell you.

Your MRI Matters—But Your MRI Isn't the Whole Story

Patients frequently come into our office carrying an MRI report filled with intimidating terms:

C4-C5 disc bulge.

C5-C6 herniation.

C6-C7 foraminal stenosis.

Degenerative disc disease.

Nerve-root impingement.

Those findings can be important.

But Dr. Boelk doesn't treat an MRI report.

He treats the patient sitting in front of him.

Your symptoms, neurological findings, spinal mechanics, examination and imaging need to make sense together.

That's also why Dr. Boelk personally reviews available imaging rather than relying solely on the written radiology report.

When clinically indicated, additional imaging or medical evaluation may be recommended before treatment begins.

Another San Diego Patient With Neck Symptoms From a “Pinched Nerve”

Jose Mejia described experiencing neck symptoms related to a pinched nerve.

After treatment at our office, he reported:

“Treatment made a significant improvement in my neck symptoms that were being caused by a pinched nerve. Highly recommended.”

And Christine Sherk came to Dr. Boelk because of severe nighttime pain associated with what she described as a pinched nerve near her shoulder. The episodes were disrupting her sleep and even making her nervous about triggering another flare-up during workouts.

Christine reported that after several treatments the flare-ups stopped and she was able to return to her normal routine. She also appreciated being given exercises and strategies to help prevent future problems.

Do You Need Surgery for a Herniated Disc in Your Neck?

Sometimes the answer is yes.

There are cervical conditions where surgical evaluation is absolutely appropriate, particularly when there is significant or progressive neurological compromise, spinal cord involvement, instability or other serious findings.

But having a bulging or herniated cervical disc does not automatically mean you need surgery.

For an appropriate patient without surgical red flags, there may be reasonable non-surgical options worth exploring first.

And that's really the purpose of your consultation with Dr. Boelk.

Not to convince you to undergo decompression.

To determine whether you are a candidate for it.

What Happens at Your No-Charge Consultation?

This is intentionally easy.

If you've been struggling with neck pain and aren't sure what to do next, schedule a No-Charge Consultation with Dr. Boelk.

If you already have an MRI, bring it with you.

You'll have an opportunity to discuss:

  • How your neck problem started

  • Where you're experiencing symptoms

  • Whether symptoms travel into your shoulder, arm or hand

  • What treatments you've already tried

  • What your MRI or other imaging shows

  • Whether Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression may be appropriate

  • What the next step would be if you decide you want to proceed

There is no obligation to begin treatment simply because you came in for a consultation.

And if Dr. Boelk doesn't believe you're an appropriate candidate, he'll tell you.

You've Tried Living With It. What If There Is Another Option?

If neck pain is affecting your sleep, work, workouts, golf, surfing, driving or simply your ability to get through the day comfortably, waiting another six months probably isn't the answer.

And if you've already tried other treatments without lasting improvement, repeating the exact same approach may not be the answer either.

Find out what's actually going on.

If you have chronic neck pain, a cervical disc bulge or herniation, degenerative disc disease, foraminal stenosis, or pain, numbness and tingling traveling into your shoulder, arm or hand, schedule a consultation with Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC.
