Low Back Pain Relief Exercises in San Diego, CA
Low Back Pain Relief Exercises in San Diego, CA – Why Some Movements Help and Others Make Pain Worse
Most people with low back pain assume they simply need to stretch more.
But one of the biggest mistakes Dr. Cassidy Boelk DC sees is patients repeatedly forcing movements their spine simply does not tolerate well.
In fact, the WRONG movement can sometimes make low back pain, sciatica, disc irritation, or nerve symptoms significantly worse.
That’s because low back pain is not one-size-fits-all.
Some people respond well to extension-based movements. Others improve with unloading, stabilization, or side-glide correction. Some patients actually worsen with aggressive stretching altogether.
At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Boelk has spent nearly 20 years helping patients identify the true source of their pain and determine which movements their spine responds best to.
As a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor, Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist, founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy, and a doctor who has personally performed over 100,000 spinal decompression treatments, Dr. Boelk focuses heavily on individualized evaluation and movement analysis — not generic “cookie-cutter” exercise programs.
Many patients travel from throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Mexico, Canada, Spain, and the United Kingdom seeking his expertise in chronic low back pain, sciatica, disc bulges, and nerve-related conditions.
“After Trying Other Treatments, Things Finally Started Changing”
“I had severe sciatica and low back pain that made it difficult to sit, stand, and sleep. I had already tried other decompression machines and honestly didn’t get much relief.
After seeing Dr. Boelk and starting treatment with the DRX9000, things finally started changing. Around 12 sessions in, my symptoms started centralizing and improving significantly.
Dr. Boelk explained things thoroughly and actually customized the treatment based on how my body responded. I’m extremely thankful I found this office.”

Many patients are surprised to learn that low back pain and sciatica often respond very differently depending on the underlying source of the problem and the movements being performed.
That’s why proper evaluation matters.
Watch: 3 Gentle Movements That May Help Certain Types of Low Back Pain
In the video below, Dr. Boelk demonstrates 3 gentle at-home movements that may help SOME forms of low back pain depending on the source and pattern of symptoms.
These include:
✅ Seated rotations
✅ Lateral side glides
✅ Relaxed prone extension positioning
The important thing to understand is this:
These are NOT universal fixes.
Different pain patterns often respond to very different movement strategies.
If symptoms sharply worsen, increase down the leg, or become more intense after a movement, it may not be the correct direction for your condition.
Why Different Types of Low Back Pain Respond Differently
Low back pain can come from many different structures and movement patterns, including:
- Spinal disc irritation
- Joint restriction
- Muscle guarding
- Nerve irritation
- Poor spinal stability
- Postural stress
- Hip mobility limitations
- Repetitive compression
- Chronic sitting positions
This is one reason why the same stretch that helps one person may aggravate another.
For example, many disc-related conditions worsen with repeated bending forward or aggressive hamstring stretching, while some stiffness-based conditions may improve from gentle rotational movement.
That distinction matters.
At our San Diego office, detailed evaluations are performed to help determine:
- what movements increase symptoms
- what movements reduce symptoms
- whether symptoms centralize or peripheralize
- how the spine tolerates loading and motion
- whether the condition may be disc-related, muscular, nerve-related, or stability-related
This helps guide a more individualized treatment strategy rather than giving every patient the same exercises.
Movement #1: Seated Rotations
Gentle seated rotations may help some patients experiencing stiffness, guarded movement, or reduced spinal mobility.
The key is to move slowly and avoid forcing the rotation aggressively.
Breathing and relaxation are important.
This movement is often tolerated better when symptoms are more stiffness-driven rather than highly nerve-irritated.
However, if rotational movement increases leg pain, numbness, or sharp symptoms, the movement should be stopped.
Movement #2: Lateral Side Glides
Side glides are one of the most overlooked movements for certain types of one-sided low back or leg symptoms.
In some patients, especially those with disc irritation or lateral shifting patterns, gentle movement away from the painful side may help reduce pressure and improve motion tolerance.
This is NOT appropriate for everyone.
But when used correctly in the proper patient, it can sometimes provide surprisingly fast symptom reduction.
This is one reason why movement assessment is so important before simply prescribing generic stretches.
Movement #3: Relaxed Prone Extension Positioning
One of the most misunderstood concepts in low back pain treatment is extension positioning.
Many people incorrectly force aggressive “cobra” stretches or repetitive press-ups that their spine may not tolerate.
Instead, some patients respond better to simply relaxing into a gentle unloaded extension position while allowing the low back muscles to calm down.
This relaxed prone positioning may help certain disc-related pain patterns by temporarily reducing pressure sensitivity.
Again, the response matters.
If symptoms centralize or reduce, that may be a positive sign.
If symptoms worsen or travel further into the leg, the movement may not be appropriate.
Why Generic Stretching Programs Often Fail
One of the biggest frustrations patients experience is trying exercise after exercise online without understanding WHY their symptoms continue returning.
Many programs fail because they:
- oversimplify back pain
- assume all low back pain is muscular
- ignore spinal disc mechanics
- ignore nerve irritation
- fail to assess directional preference
- focus only on passive stretching
- overlook instability and compensation patterns
This is why detailed evaluations matter.
At our office, Dr. Boelk evaluates not just the painful area, but also:
- hip mobility
- core stability
- posture
- movement compensation
- spinal loading tolerance
- disc irritation patterns
- sitting and standing mechanics
That combination often provides significantly more clarity than simply guessing with exercises.
“I Was Told Surgery Was My Only Option”
“I had constant low back pain and severe sciatic pain going down my leg. Sitting in the car, sleeping, and even simple daily activities became miserable.
I had tried chiropractic treatment, medications, injections, and physical therapy without lasting relief.
Dr. Boelk took the time to actually explain what was happening and why my symptoms kept returning. The decompression treatments combined with the exercises and stability work helped me more than anything else I had tried.
I’m now back to functioning normally again and avoiding surgery.”

When Low Back Pain May Actually Be Disc-Related
While not every patient has a disc problem, some signs that may suggest disc involvement include:
- Pain when sitting
- Pain bending forward
- Pain traveling into the glute or leg
- Recurring flare-ups
- Morning stiffness
- Pain with coughing or sneezing
- Numbness or tingling
These are some of the conditions Dr. Cassidy Boelk DC commonly evaluates in patients seeking non-surgical solutions for chronic low back pain.
Why Dr. Cassidy Boelk DC Uses a Combined Approach
At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, treatment is designed to combine both passive and active strategies.
While Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression using the DRX9000 can be extremely effective for certain patients, Dr. Boelk also emphasizes the importance of:
- movement correction
- hip mobility
- spinal stability
- posture
- active rehabilitation
- strengthening
- long-term spinal control
The office exclusively uses DRX9000 True Spinal Decompression Systems and currently houses 7 DRX9000 units — making it one of the largest spinal decompression facilities in California.
Dr. Boelk and his team only use DRX9000 systems because of their research-backed technology and clinical consistency. Research involving spinal decompression has been associated with institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, Duke Medical Center, and Mayo Clinic.
Not every patient is a candidate for spinal decompression, which is why proper evaluation always comes first.
