Is Chiropractic Spinal Decompression Effective for Sciatica in Chula Vista, CA

Is Chiropractic Spinal Decompression Effective for Sciatica in Chula Vista, CA?

Sciatica, herniated discs, and shooting leg pain can make everyday life miserable. But is surgery your only option?

If you've been dealing with pain that travels from your lower back into your buttock, leg, or foot, you know how frustrating sciatica can be.

Maybe sitting in your car makes it worse. Maybe your leg goes numb when you stand too long. Or perhaps you've already tried physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, medications, or injections and you're still looking for relief.

For some people, non-surgical spinal decompression may be another option worth exploring.

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC, has spent more than 22 years working with patients suffering from herniated discs, sciatica, and chronic spinal problems.

He's a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor, Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist, and founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy, where he trains other doctors in spinal decompression techniques.

His Kearny Mesa clinic features seven spinal decompression systems, including four lumbar DRX9000 units.

Patients travel from Chula Vista, throughout Southern California, other states, and even other countries seeking his expertise.

Start With a No-Charge, No-Obligation Consultation

Before committing to treatment, you can schedule a consultation to learn whether spinal decompression might be appropriate for your condition.

Here's what the consultation includes:

  • A conversation about your back pain, sciatica, numbness, or tingling

  • A discussion of previous treatments you've tried

  • Discussion of any MRI reports or X-rays you already have

  • An explanation of how DRX9000 spinal decompression works

  • Guidance about whether a complete examination would be an appropriate next step

There is no charge and no obligation to begin treatment.

The consultation does not include a physical examination, new X-rays, MRI, or treatment. Those services, when recommended, are discussed separately.

Call 619-298-0800 to schedule your no-charge consultation.

Patient Experience: Four Years of Back Pain and Leg Numbness

<text color="secondary" weight="medium">ROSA ALGRAVEZ — CALEXICO, CALIFORNIA</text>

Rosa struggled with lower back pain and leg numbness for four years. Even ordinary activities like shopping and bathing had become difficult.

She and her husband eventually decided to travel from Calexico to San Diego for spinal decompression treatment.

“Hi my name is Rosa Algravez. I have suffered from leg numbness and low back pain for 4 years. I haven’t been able to do groceries or even take baths without pain. I looked for relief with various doctors with no luck. I have done treatments ranging from chiropractic to acupuncture. My husband found Dr. Boelk in the newspaper and we decided since we had tried everything else that we were going to give this a try. After my first few treatments, I feel as though I have returned to 100%. Life for me is completely different.

My husband and I have returned to enjoying life. We travel 300+ miles everyday from Calexico. I can do things now with little to no limitations. The staff makes you feel welcomed and it’s a very family environment. The payments are easy and I would recommend this to anyone suffering with low back pain. Thank You”

— Rosa Algravez, Calexico, CA

Rosa's story is an example of why some patients are willing to travel considerable distances to explore specialized spinal care.

What Causes Sciatica in the First Place?

Sciatica isn't a disease by itself. It's a term used to describe symptoms associated with irritation of the nerves that contribute to the sciatic nerve.

Those nerves begin in your lower back and travel through your buttock and down your leg.

When a nerve root becomes irritated or compressed, you may experience:

  • Sharp pain shooting down one leg

  • Burning in the buttock or calf

  • Numbness or tingling in your foot

  • Pain that gets worse when sitting

  • Weakness in your leg or foot

  • Difficulty walking or sleeping comfortably

One common cause is a herniated disc.

The two lower-back levels frequently involved are L4-L5 and L5-S1.

When a disc herniates, disc material can irritate a nearby nerve root. That irritation may produce symptoms far away from the actual disc.

However, not all sciatica comes from herniated discs. Spinal stenosis and other conditions can cause similar symptoms.

That's why understanding the cause matters.

Can Spinal Decompression Actually Help Sciatica?

For some patients with disc-related sciatica, mechanical traction may help relieve symptoms.

Non-surgical spinal decompression uses controlled pulling forces to temporarily change the mechanical loading on the spine.

At Dr. Boelk's clinic, treatment is performed using computerized DRX9000 systems.

Patients lie on a specialized table while the machine applies programmed cycles of traction and relaxation.

Treatment settings are selected according to the patient's condition and tolerance.

The research on lumbar traction is mixed. Some studies have found short-term improvements for selected patients, while others have found limited additional benefit.

Spinal decompression is not a guaranteed cure for sciatica, and it has not been established as a reliable way to reverse disc herniations.

The more useful question is whether it makes sense for your particular condition.

Why Experience Matters With Spinal Decompression

A spinal decompression machine doesn't diagnose a herniated disc.

It doesn't determine whether a patient has spinal instability.

And it can't decide when someone should be referred to a surgeon.

Those decisions require clinical judgment.

Dr. Boelk, DC, has spent more than two decades focusing extensively on disc-related spinal problems.

His experience includes:

  • More than 22 years in clinical practice

  • Over 100,000 spinal decompression sessions overseen

  • Certification as a Spinal Decompression Doctor

  • Certification as a Pain-Free Performance Specialist

  • Founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy

  • Training other doctors in spinal decompression protocols

  • Four lumbar DRX9000 and three cervical decompression systems

Dr. Boelk, DC, also has personal experience with serious back injuries.

He fractured his lower back at age 16 and later experienced lumbar disc herniations and sciatica.

Those experiences helped shape his interest in non-surgical spinal care and rehabilitation.

Patients Have Traveled From Across the Country for Treatment

The clinic regularly hears from people who have already tried several treatment approaches and are searching for another option.

Some live locally. Others travel from outside California or internationally.

One example is Lynn, who traveled from Alaska.

Patient Experience: Traveling From Alaska for Spinal Decompression

<text color="secondary" weight="medium">LYNN C. — ALASKA</text>

“My name is Lynn. I am from Alaska, and I just want to say it was totally worth taking a trip to go to the Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego. I was having pain radiating down my legs, I couldn’t sleep, I could barely walk.

After treatment I am back to shoveling snow, teaching school, taking walks. So, I just want to thank Dr. Boelk and the clinic, you guys are wonderful, and you have created such a wonderful, friendly, kind and truly caring atmosphere. I highly encourage anybody that might be considering spinal decompression therapy, it really makes a difference.”

— Lynn C., Alaska

For Lynn, being able to return to teaching, walking, and everyday activities was especially meaningful.

Patients from Chula Vista have a much shorter journey to the clinic in Kearny Mesa.

What Happens During a Spinal Decompression Examination?

The consultation is a starting point. A complete examination is a separate appointment when clinically indicated.

Dr. Boelk, DC, evaluates the patient's symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, and available imaging.

Depending on the findings, the examination may include orthopedic and neurological testing.

Standing, weight-bearing spinal X-rays and flexion-extension views may be recommended to evaluate alignment and possible instability.

MRI findings can also be important, particularly when symptoms suggest a lumbar disc herniation or nerve root compression.

The purpose is to determine whether spinal decompression is a reasonable treatment option.

Not every patient needs the same tests, and not every patient qualifies for treatment.

How Many DRX9000 Treatments Are Usually Needed?

Many treatment programs at the clinic involve approximately 12 to 24 sessions, often scheduled three times per week.

A typical DRX9000 session lasts approximately 20 to 25 minutes.

Recommendations depend on the patient's condition and clinical findings.

Progress is reassessed during treatment.

Some patients may also benefit from rehabilitation exercises to improve spinal stability, hip strength, and movement tolerance.

The goal isn't simply to spend time on a machine. It's to help patients improve their ability to function and return to activities they enjoy.

Not Everyone Is a Candidate — And That's Important

Some clinics focus so heavily on getting patients started that they overlook an important question:

Should this patient receive spinal decompression at all?

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, patient selection is an important part of the process.

Certain conditions, including acute fractures, significant spinal instability, severe osteoporosis, progressive neurological weakness, and some postoperative conditions involving spinal hardware, may make decompression inappropriate.

Pregnancy is also an exclusion for lumbar decompression at the clinic.

Some patients need a different type of conservative care. Others need a surgical consultation.

New bowel or bladder dysfunction, saddle anesthesia, or rapidly worsening neurological weakness requires emergency medical evaluation.

Patient Experience: An Honest Recommendation, Even When Surgery Was the Better Option

<text color="secondary" weight="medium">JEFF J. — TUCSON, ARIZONA</text>

“I found this terrific practice on social media. I followed up and did my own research so I decided to pay them a visit. The place is clean, well organized and run by a very efficient receptionist. I met with the doctor and after a honest and forthright conversation, we both determined that surgery was my only option to correct my back issues. I will return as a customer when the time is right.”

— Jeff J., Tucson, AZ

Jeff traveled from Arizona to meet with Dr. Boelk, DC.

Following their discussion, they agreed that surgery was the appropriate option for his condition.

That kind of recommendation matters. A doctor should be willing to explain when a treatment isn't the right choice.

What About Exercises for Sciatica?

Exercise can play an important role in managing many cases of sciatica.

But the right exercises depend on what's causing your symptoms.

For example, some patients feel better walking and standing. Others find those activities aggravate their leg pain.

Depending on the condition, rehabilitation may include gentle walking, modified core stabilization exercises, hip strengthening, and gradual resistance training.

Dr. Boelk, DC, incorporates his experience as a Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist into rehabilitation recommendations.

The goal is to help patients become stronger and more confident with everyday movement.

Is Spinal Decompression Worth Considering Before Surgery?

Many people with sciatica improve with conservative care and never need surgery.

Others have conditions that require more advanced medical treatment.

Spinal decompression is one possible conservative option for selected patients, but it isn't a substitute for a proper diagnosis.

If you've been told you have a herniated disc at L4-L5 or L5-S1, or you've been experiencing persistent pain traveling down your leg, it may be worth discussing whether spinal decompression is appropriate.

The best starting point is understanding your condition and the available options.
