How to Heal a Herniated Disc Naturally Without Surgery – San Diego, CA

How to Heal a Herniated Disc Naturally Without Surgery – San Diego, CA

A herniated disc can create severe low back pain, burning leg pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and even difficulty sitting or driving comfortably.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming every herniated disc should be treated exactly the same way.

In reality, every disc injury is different.

Some people improve with certain movements…
while others accidentally continue doing activities that may keep irritating the disc and surrounding nerves.

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy Boelk DC has spent nearly 20 years helping patients suffering from severe disc-related neck and low back pain. Dr. Boelk is a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor, Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist, founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy, and has personally performed over 100,000 spinal decompression treatments.

Many patients travel from throughout San Diego County, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Spain seeking his expertise in Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) and complex disc-related conditions.

1. Avoid Prolonged Sitting Whenever Possible

For MANY people with a herniated disc, prolonged sitting may increase pressure and irritation within the spine.

This is one reason why some people notice:

  • burning pain into the leg
  • numbness or tingling
  • worsening low back pain
  • pain driving
  • symptoms after long desk work

Sitting itself is not always “bad,” but prolonged compression and poor positioning may sometimes aggravate irritated discs and nerves.

Even when sitting temporarily feels better, many patients still benefit from:

  • standing more frequently
  • walking briefly throughout the day
  • avoiding sitting for several hours nonstop
  • changing positions regularly

For some patients, simply standing and walking for 3–5 minutes every hour may help reduce ongoing irritation.

The important thing to understand is:
❗Not everyone responds the same way.

This is why proper evaluation matters.

2. Avoid Exercises That Create Excessive Compression

If a disc is already irritated, repeatedly loading and compressing the spine may sometimes worsen symptoms for certain individuals.

If Dr. Boelk personally had an active herniated disc flare-up, he would initially avoid exercises such as:

  • heavy squats
  • heavy deadlifts
  • repetitive high-impact running
  • aggressive twisting under load
  • exercises that significantly worsen leg symptoms

Instead, he would focus on movements that feel GOOD on the body while keeping the spine in a more neutral and controlled position.

For SOME people, this may include:

  • walking
  • elliptical training
  • recumbent biking
  • swimming
  • lighter controlled strengthening exercises
  • gentle stability exercises

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to “push through” severe nerve irritation.

Sometimes the smartest approach is temporarily calming irritation FIRST… then progressively rebuilding stability and strength properly afterward.

At our office, this is one reason why active rehabilitation is combined with Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression rather than relying only on passive treatment.

3. Prioritize Proper Hydration Daily

Spinal discs rely heavily on proper water content and fluid exchange.

While hydration alone will not “fix” a herniated disc, many people underestimate how important overall hydration is for spinal and disc health.

Dr. Boelk would personally focus on:

  • consistent water intake daily
  • reducing excessive inflammatory habits
  • improving movement throughout the day
  • avoiding constant compression positions

Many patients spend years dehydrated, sedentary, compressed, and inflamed without realizing how much it may contribute to recurring flare-ups.

Why Many Herniated Disc Problems Keep Returning

One of the biggest misconceptions online is the idea that a herniated disc simply “goes away” on its own.

While some people do improve naturally over time, many others continue dealing with:

  • recurring flare-ups
  • repeated sciatica episodes
  • sitting intolerance
  • numbness and tingling
  • chronic stiffness
  • weakness
  • severe pain driving or sleeping

Often this occurs because the underlying compression, irritation, instability, posture issues, or movement dysfunctions were never properly addressed.

This is also why generic stretching programs found online do not always work — and may sometimes even worsen symptoms for certain individuals.

Why Our Office Uses the DRX9000 for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

At our office, we exclusively use DRX9000 True Spinal Decompression Systems because not all decompression machines are the same.

We currently have:

  • 4 lumbar DRX9000 systems
  • 3 cervical DRX9000 systems

making us one of the larger spinal decompression facilities in California.

Research involving spinal decompression has been associated with institutions including Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, Duke Medical Center, and Mayo Clinic.

The goal of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) is to:

  • reduce pressure within the spine
  • reduce irritation affecting discs and nerves
  • improve mobility
  • create better conditions for healing
  • help patients avoid unnecessary surgery whenever possible

However, Dr. Boelk strongly emphasizes:
❗The DRX9000 is only ONE PART of treatment.

Long-term results typically require addressing:

  • muscle imbalances
  • hip mobility
  • spinal stability
  • posture
  • movement patterns
  • core control

This is why individualized treatment protocols matter so much.

Not Everyone Is a Candidate for Treatment

One thing that separates our office from many others is honesty.

Not every patient qualifies for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

Some patients require different treatment approaches…
and some patients may need surgical consultation depending on the severity of their condition.

Every patient goes through a detailed evaluation process to determine:

  • whether spinal disc compression may actually be contributing to symptoms
  • whether decompression is appropriate
  • whether the patient is likely to respond well
  • what additional therapies may be necessary

Real Patient Experiences

Many patients who come to our office have already:

  • tried physical therapy
  • received injections
  • undergone chiropractic care elsewhere
  • tried medications
  • attempted traction
  • considered surgery

A large number of our patients specifically seek out Dr. Boelk because of his extensive experience with severe disc-related conditions and customized decompression protocols.

Patients also regularly travel from outside San Diego and outside California because of the clinic’s reputation and specialized focus on Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.
