How Do I Know If My Herniated Disc Is Healing? | Kearny Mesa, CA
Is Your Herniated Disc Actually Getting Better?
When you're recovering from a herniated disc, progress isn't always obvious.
You may wake up one morning feeling significantly better, only to experience increased soreness two days later.
Maybe the intense leg pain has improved, but you still have numbness.
Or perhaps your pain level hasn't changed dramatically, but you're suddenly able to drive farther, walk longer, work more comfortably, or sleep through the night.
This can leave patients wondering:
“How do I know if my herniated disc is actually healing?”
One of the most important things to understand is that healing doesn't always mean your pain disappears all at once.
Instead, look at the overall trend.
Are your symptoms becoming less intense?
Are they occurring less frequently?
Is nerve pain traveling a shorter distance?
Are you becoming stronger?
Can you do things today that you couldn't comfortably do several weeks ago?
Those changes may provide a much better picture of your recovery than judging your condition based on one particularly good—or bad—day.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ From Barely Walking to Exercising Again
Amanda came to the office after months of severe pain caused by an extruded disc pressing on her L5 nerve.
Her symptoms had become so severe that she was struggling to stand upright and walk. She had already been scheduled for spinal injections and a surgical evaluation.
Her story also provides a good example of what functional improvement can look like during recovery:
**“Last year, I spent three months constantly going back and forth between doctor's appointments and urgent care. The pain was unbearable—I was taking medication regularly just to get through the day. Getting out of bed was excruciating, and walking or standing felt like torture. Every step filled me with dread.
In December, my doctor finally ordered an MRI. That's when I learned I had an extruded disc pressing on my L5 nerve, which affects the leg and foot. My doctor scheduled two follow-up appointments: one for pain management (spinal injections), and another to evaluate me for surgery.
Then I discovered spinal decompression therapy. I was thrilled to find a non-invasive alternative. I never ended up needing either of those appointments.
Now, I'm walking regularly, standing up straight—something I couldn't do before. When I first sought help, I was so hunched over that I had to use a cane just to move forward. Because of the pain, I hadn't exercised in months. But now, I'm doing a program called 75 Hard, which requires not one but two 45-minute workouts every day, and I've even gotten back to lifting weights!
I'm so thankful I found this place. It's conveniently located near my work, which makes it easy to fit sessions into my lunch break. Dr. Boelk and the staff are incredibly friendly and polite—it's always a pleasure to come in. The environment is so relaxing that I look forward to each visit. I truly thank God for leading me to this alternative. It's made such a difference in my life.”**

Amanda's experience is her individual result. Results vary, and not every patient will experience the same outcome or avoid injections or surgery.
But notice the changes she described:
Walking. Standing upright. Exercising. Lifting weights. Returning to normal life.
Those functional improvements can be important indicators of progress.

7 Signs Your Herniated Disc May Be Healing
1. Your Pain Is Becoming Less Intense
Pain reduction is an obvious sign to watch for, but don't focus exclusively on whether you're completely pain-free.
Consider where you started.
If severe pain that once dominated your entire day is becoming more manageable or occurring for shorter periods, that can represent progress.
Look at the trend over several weeks rather than comparing Tuesday to Wednesday.
2. Your Leg or Arm Pain Isn't Traveling as Far
With a lumbar herniated disc, nerve symptoms may travel from the lower back into the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot.
With a cervical disc injury, symptoms may travel into the shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers.
As irritation decreases, some patients notice that their symptoms don't travel as far.
For example, pain that previously extended into the foot may become limited primarily to the buttock or thigh.
This type of change can be clinically meaningful even if some pain remains.
3. Numbness and Tingling Are Improving
A herniated disc can affect a spinal nerve and produce symptoms other than pain.
These may include:
-
Numbness
-
Tingling
-
Pins-and-needles sensations
-
Burning
-
Altered sensation
If these symptoms are becoming less frequent, less intense, or affecting a smaller area, that may be encouraging.
Nerve symptoms can sometimes improve more slowly than pain, so recovery may take time.
4. Your Strength Is Returning
Muscle strength is particularly important when a herniated disc is affecting a nerve.
A lumbar disc problem may contribute to weakness involving the leg, ankle, or foot.
A cervical disc problem may affect the shoulder, arm, wrist, or hand.
Improving strength may be a positive sign.
Progressively worsening weakness, however, deserves prompt medical evaluation.
5. You Can Sit, Stand, or Walk Longer
This is one of the easiest ways to track meaningful progress.
Instead of only asking:
“How much does it hurt today?”
Ask:
“What can I do today that I couldn't do a few weeks ago?”
Maybe you can now:
-
Drive to work more comfortably
-
Sit through a meeting
-
Stand longer
-
Walk farther
-
Go grocery shopping
-
Work a full day
-
Take your children somewhere
-
Go out to dinner without constantly changing positions
Those are meaningful improvements.
6. You're Sleeping Better
Severe disc and nerve pain can make sleep extremely difficult.
Some patients wake repeatedly because of pain or struggle to find any comfortable position.
If you're sleeping longer and waking less frequently because of symptoms, that can be another sign that the condition is settling down.
7. You're Gradually Returning to Normal Life
Ultimately, this may be the most important measurement.
Most patients don't come to the office because they simply want their pain score to change from a 7 to a 3.
They want to do something again.
They want to:
-
Work
-
Exercise
-
Lift weights
-
Golf
-
Surf
-
Travel
-
Walk
-
Play with their children or grandchildren
-
Sit through a flight
-
Return to their normal routine
Function matters.
If you're progressively returning to activities you previously couldn't tolerate, that's an important part of evaluating recovery.
Can a Herniated Disc Feel Worse Before It Feels Better?
Symptoms can fluctuate.
Some patients experience periods where they feel considerably better followed by temporary flare-ups.
Increasing activity can sometimes reveal that the spine isn't yet ready for everything the patient wants to do.
That doesn't automatically mean you've “re-herniated” the disc.
It also doesn't automatically mean everything is fine.
The important thing is to evaluate the overall pattern.
Are flare-ups becoming less severe?
Do they resolve faster?
Are you able to do progressively more between them?
Is your neurological function improving?
Recovery should be evaluated over time rather than based on one isolated day.
Is Pain Reduction the Same as Disc Healing?
Not exactly.
Pain can decrease as inflammation and nerve irritation improve even while the injured tissues continue recovering.
This is why feeling significantly better doesn't necessarily mean it's wise to immediately return to heavy lifting or every activity you performed before the injury.
One of the common challenges during recovery is that patients understandably want to make up for lost time as soon as they start feeling better.
A progressive return to activity may be more appropriate.
What If I'm Not Improving?
If your symptoms have remained essentially unchanged—or are getting worse—it may be time to reevaluate the condition.
Questions that may need to be considered include:
-
Is the herniated disc actually causing the symptoms?
-
Is a spinal nerve still being irritated or compressed?
-
Is there spinal or foraminal stenosis?
-
Is there instability?
-
Is another structure contributing to the pain?
-
Are certain activities repeatedly aggravating the injury?
-
Does the treatment plan need to change?
For appropriate patients, Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy may be another conservative option to consider.

Not Every Patient Is a Candidate
There are patients Dr. Boelk evaluates who are not accepted for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.
Sometimes additional testing is needed.
Sometimes another conservative treatment is more appropriate.
And sometimes surgery really is the appropriate recommendation.
Jeff traveled from Tucson looking for another option for his back condition.
After evaluating him, Dr. Boelk recommended otherwise.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I found this terrific practice on social media. I followed up and did my own research so I decided to pay them a visit. The place is clean, well organized and run by a very efficient receptionist. I met with the doctor and after a honest and forthright conversation, we both determined that surgery was my only option to correct my back issues. I will return as a customer when the time is right.”
— Jeff J., Tucson, AZ
That distinction matters.
The goal isn't to recommend a DRX9000 treatment program to everyone.
The goal is to determine whether you're an appropriate candidate.

However, progressively worsening neurological symptoms shouldn't simply be ignored.
Seek prompt medical evaluation for increasing weakness or significant deterioration in your ability to walk or function.
Seek emergency medical attention for symptoms including:
-
New loss of bowel or bladder control
-
Numbness in the groin or saddle region
-
Rapidly progressing muscle weakness
-
Significant or rapidly worsening neurological deficits
These symptoms may indicate serious nerve compression and require immediate evaluation.
