HERNIATED DISC TREATMENT SCRIPPS RANCH, CA

Can You Heal a Herniated Disc Without Surgery?

Few injuries can disrupt your life like a herniated disc.

One day you may have a little stiffness in your back. The next, you're experiencing pain shooting down your leg, numbness in your foot, weakness, or difficulty standing, walking, sleeping, or even driving.

If you've been diagnosed with a herniated disc, bulging disc, disc protrusion, or disc extrusion, you're probably asking yourself one question:

"Do I need surgery?"

The answer isn't always yes.

While some patients absolutely require surgery, many others improve with conservative treatment. The key is understanding what's causing your symptoms, reviewing your MRI, performing a thorough examination, and determining which treatment options are appropriate for your specific condition.

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, we have spent more than 22 years helping patients suffering from disc-related spinal conditions. During that time, Dr. Cassidy James Boelk has personally performed more than 100,000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression treatments and evaluated thousands of patients trying to avoid unnecessary surgery whenever appropriate.

Our goal isn't to convince everyone they need spinal decompression.

Our goal is to help you understand your diagnosis, explain your options, and honestly determine whether you're an appropriate candidate for conservative care.

"Last year, I spent three months constantly going back and forth between doctor's appointments and urgent care. The pain was unbearable... My doctor scheduled appointments for spinal injections and a surgical consultation. Then I discovered spinal decompression therapy. I was thrilled to find a non-invasive alternative... Today I'm walking, lifting weights again, and my life has completely changed."

WHAT IS A HERNIATED DISC?

Your spine is made up of 24 movable bones called vertebrae.

Between each vertebra sits a spinal disc that functions as a shock absorber, helping your spine bend, twist, and absorb everyday forces.

Each disc has two primary components:

  • A tough outer ring (annulus fibrosus) that helps contain the disc.
  • A soft, gel-like center (nucleus pulposus) that absorbs shock and distributes pressure.

When the outer fibers become weakened or torn, some of the inner material may push outward. This is called a herniated disc.

Depending on where the herniation occurs and whether nearby nerves become irritated or compressed, symptoms may include:

✔ Low back pain

✔ Neck pain

✔ Sciatica

✔ Pain traveling into the leg

✔ Pain traveling into the arm

✔ Numbness

✔ Tingling

✔ Muscle weakness

Interestingly, not every herniated disc causes pain. Some people have disc herniations visible on MRI and experience very few symptoms, while others develop significant pain because the disc is irritating a nearby nerve. That's why it's so important to correlate MRI findings with a thorough physical examination rather than relying on imaging alone.

WHY DOES A HERNIATED DISC TAKE SO LONG TO HEAL?

One of the biggest misconceptions patients have is believing a herniated disc heals like a sprained ankle or pulled muscle.

Unfortunately, spinal discs are very different.

Unlike muscles, spinal discs have a relatively limited direct blood supply. Much of their nutrition comes from the movement of oxygen, water, and nutrients through the disc rather than from blood vessels entering the center of the disc.

Because of this, disc injuries often heal much more slowly than many other injuries throughout the body.

That helps explain why some patients continue experiencing pain months—or even years—after the original injury.

It also helps explain why simply resting for a few weeks doesn't always solve the problem.

CAN A HERNIATED DISC HEAL WITHOUT SURGERY?

In many cases, yes.

Every patient is different, and treatment recommendations should always be based on your symptoms, physical examination, imaging findings, and overall health.

Depending on your specific condition, treatment options may include:

  • Activity modification
  • Physical therapy
  • Exercise
  • Chiropractic care
  • Rehabilitation
  • Medications
  • Epidural injections
  • Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
  • Surgery, when medically necessary

One of the biggest mistakes patients make is assuming there are only two options:

"Live with the pain or have surgery."

In reality, there are often several conservative treatment approaches that may be appropriate before surgery is considered, provided there are no medical red flags requiring immediate surgical intervention.

HOW DOES NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION WORK?

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a computer-controlled treatment designed to gently reduce pressure on injured spinal discs and irritated nerves.

At our office, we exclusively utilize the DRX9000® lumbar system and the DRX9000C® cervical system.

Treatment is customized based on your condition, examination findings, MRI results, symptoms, and response to care.

The goal is not to "push the disc back into place."

Rather, treatment is designed to reduce pressure on injured spinal structures and create an environment that may support the body's natural healing processes in appropriately selected patients.

Not everyone is a candidate, which is why a thorough evaluation is so important before beginning care.

SOMETHING YOU CAN DO TODAY

If prolonged sitting increases your back pain or sciatica, try setting a timer to stand and walk for two or three minutes every 20 to 30 minutes.

Many patients also find that using a small lumbar support while driving helps them maintain a more neutral posture and reduces discomfort during longer trips.

These simple changes won't heal a herniated disc, but they may help reduce irritation throughout the day while you're seeking an appropriate evaluation.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"After about 12 treatments, my sciatica was gone and I was nearly back to normal... The improvement has allowed me to get back to hiking, traveling, and enjoying life again. This treatment was one of the best investments I've ever made."

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT HERNIATED DISC SPECIALIST?

If you've been researching treatment for a herniated disc, you've probably seen dozens of websites making similar promises.

Instead of focusing on advertising, here are several questions every patient should ask before choosing a doctor.

Does The Doctor Regularly Treat Herniated Discs?

Disc injuries are different from muscle strains or joint pain. They require an understanding of spinal anatomy, nerve compression, MRI findings, biomechanics, rehabilitation, and the natural healing process.

Ask how often the doctor evaluates patients with herniated discs, sciatica, numbness, tingling, and spinal stenosis.

Will The Doctor Personally Review My MRI?

Your MRI is only one piece of the puzzle, but it's an important one.

A good evaluation should correlate your MRI findings with your symptoms and physical examination. Some people have large herniated discs with very little pain, while others have smaller disc injuries causing significant nerve irritation.

Your treatment plan should be based on you, not just the MRI report.

What Equipment Does The Office Use?

If spinal decompression is recommended, ask what system is being used and why.

Not all decompression systems are identical, and treatment should be individualized based on your diagnosis, examination findings, and response to care.

Does The Office Include Rehabilitation?

Helping reduce pain is important.

Helping reduce the chances of it coming back is just as important.

Depending on your condition, treatment may also include rehabilitation exercises, spinal stabilization, posture education, flexibility work, and guidance on returning to normal activities safely.

Will They Tell Me If I'm NOT A Candidate?

This may be the most important question of all.

Not every herniated disc should be treated with Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

Some patients require surgery.

Others may benefit from physical therapy, injections, or another conservative approach.

An office should be willing to tell you when their treatment is not the best option.

Honest recommendations build trust.

PATIENTS ARE WILLING TO TRAVEL FOR THE RIGHT CARE

One of the greatest compliments we receive is when patients travel long distances because they believe specialized experience matters.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I suffered from leg numbness and low back pain for four years... We travel over 300 miles from Calexico because we believe the trip is worth it... I would recommend this to anyone suffering from low back pain."

— Rosa Algravez, Calexico, CA

HONESTY COMES FIRST

One review means a great deal to us because it wasn't written by someone we treated—it was written by someone we didn't.

After reviewing the patient's condition and imaging, Dr. Boelk explained that treatment needed to wait while the injury healed and encouraged another specialist opinion.

That isn't turning someone away.

That's putting the patient's health first.

We believe every patient deserves an honest evaluation, even when the recommendation isn't treatment at our office.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM DR. CASSIDY JAMES BOELK DC

If you've read this far, chances are you've been dealing with pain for a while.

I know how frustrating that can be—not only as a doctor, but as someone who has personally recovered from significant neck and back injuries. I understand how pain can affect your sleep, your work, your hobbies, and your time with family.

My goal has never been to convince every patient they need spinal decompression. My goal is to help you understand your diagnosis, review your MRI, explain your options, and give you an honest recommendation based on your individual condition.

If I believe you're a good candidate for conservative treatment, I'll explain why.

If I don't, I'll tell you that too.

Every patient deserves honest answers, enough time to ask questions, and a clear understanding of their treatment options before making an important decision about their health.

I hope this article has helped you better understand herniated discs and the options that may be available to you. I wish you the very best on your road to recovery.
