If you've been diagnosed with a herniated disc and are suffering from sciatica, burning leg pain, foot numbness, tingling, weakness, or chronic lower back pain, you're not alone.

Every week, patients from Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Pacific Highlands Ranch, and surrounding communities visit The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego seeking answers after months—or even years—of frustration.

Many have already tried:

✔ Chiropractic Care

✔ Physical Therapy

✔ Massage Therapy

✔ Acupuncture

✔ Stretching Programs

✔ Medications

✔ Epidural Injections

✔ Pain Management

✔ Rest

✔ Ice & Heat

Yet despite all of these efforts, many continue to experience:

✔ Sciatica

✔ Burning Leg Pain

✔ Foot Numbness

✔ Tingling

✔ Weakness

✔ Difficulty Sitting

✔ Difficulty Driving

✔ Sleep Disturbance

✔ Fear Of Surgery

One of the most common things patients tell Dr. Cassidy Boelk is:

"My MRI says I have a herniated disc, but nobody has explained what that actually means."

Others ask:

"Will this heal on its own?"

"Do I need surgery?"

"Why does it keep coming back?"

The good news?

Not every herniated disc requires surgery.

Understanding what may actually be causing your symptoms is often the first step toward making an informed decision.

"THE SCIATICA IS GONE"

"I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Boelk and his staff at The Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic Center of San Diego. They have a great protocol and the best decompression machines. I've been to other places with sub par machines and didn't get any benefit.

Dr. Boelk is very attentive and cares about each person, you can see it in how he interacts with everyone. Been undergoing treatment for about 12 sessions now and the sciatica is gone and I'm almost back to normal. I didn't think it would ever heal, but even after the first session I had tremendous relief and could sleep mostly pain free for the first time in months.

Definitely worth the investment!"

— Michael Langsdale, San Diego, CA

WHAT IS A HERNIATED DISC?

Between each vertebra in your spine sits a spinal disc.

Think of the disc as a shock absorber.

When healthy, discs help distribute forces through the spine and allow normal movement.

Unfortunately, age, repetitive stress, sports injuries, accidents, poor mechanics, and degeneration can sometimes damage a disc.

When that occurs, the disc may:

✔ Bulge

✔ Protrude

✔ Herniate

✔ Extrude

As the injury progresses, nearby nerves can become irritated.

This is why many patients experience symptoms not only in their back, but also in their:

✔ Buttock

✔ Hip

✔ Thigh

✔ Calf

✔ Foot

Many patients are surprised to learn that severe leg pain is often originating from a problem in the lower back.

COMMON HERNIATED DISC SYMPTOMS

Symptoms vary from patient to patient.

Common complaints include:

✔ Sciatica

✔ Burning Pain Down The Leg

✔ Foot Numbness

✔ Tingling In The Toes

✔ Leg Weakness

✔ Difficulty Walking

✔ Pain While Sitting

✔ Pain While Driving

✔ Difficulty Sleeping

✔ Lower Back Pain

Some patients have severe back pain.

Others have almost no back pain and only experience symptoms in their leg or foot.

This is one reason a proper evaluation remains so important.

WHY DO HERNIATED DISC SYMPTOMS KEEP COMING BACK?

One of the biggest frustrations patients experience is recurring flare-ups.

Many patients tell us:

"I was doing better and then all of a sudden it came back."

Unfortunately, disc injuries rarely improve in a perfectly straight line.

Many patients experience:

Improvement

Increased Activity

Flare-Up

Improvement

More Activity

Another Flare-Up

This cycle can continue for months or years.

Fortunately, a flare-up does not automatically mean you're back to square one.

In many cases, it simply means the underlying problem has not fully resolved.

"IT HURT SO BAD IT MADE ME WANT TO CRY"

"I have been dealing with back pain for several years. It got so bad that I had surgery 5 years ago for a bulging disc. About 5 months ago the disc bulged again hitting my sciatic nerve creating pain in my legs that made me want to cry it hurt so bad.

After trying so many other options I was fortunate enough to find The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego.

After just a few sessions I noticed a difference. Now after being there for the past few months I'm able to go about my normal life again.

What a blessing it was to find a Dr. that genuinely cares and knows how to help people in my situation."

— Anthony K., San Diego, CA

WHY SITTING AND DRIVING OFTEN AGGRAVATE HERNIATED DISCS

Many patients notice:

✔ Increased Leg Pain While Sitting

✔ More Numbness During Long Drives

✔ More Tingling At Work

✔ Increased Symptoms During Travel

✔ Relief When Standing Or Walking

This pattern is extremely common among patients suffering from disc injuries.

One reason many patients from Carmel Valley seek consultation is because they spend significant time commuting, working at computers, traveling, or sitting for prolonged periods.

Many notice:

"I can walk longer than I can sit."

This is a pattern Dr. Boelk sees frequently when evaluating disc-related conditions.

"VERY NICE DR. AND HONEST"

One consultation patient shared:

"Very nice Dr. and Honest! I would definitely recommend anyone who hasn't had metal put in their back in a surgery to go to him and give his program a shot. I believe it would definitely help. Just not in my personal case. As I have a lot of hardware in my back. But I'm glad I took the time to meet with him. It was very informative all around."

— Toni W., Lake Elsinore, CA

NOT EVERY PATIENT IS A CANDIDATE

One thing many patients appreciate about Dr. Boelk is honesty.

Not every patient qualifies.

Not every patient can avoid surgery.

And not every patient should undergo spinal decompression treatment.

If Dr. Boelk believes:

✔ Surgery Is The Better Option

✔ The Condition Is Outside Our Scope

✔ Another Provider Is More Appropriate

He will tell you.

Many patients find this refreshing in a healthcare environment where they often feel pressured into treatment.

"THEY SCHEDULED ME FOR INJECTIONS AND SURGERY"

"Last year, I spent three months constantly going back and forth between doctor's appointments and urgent care. The pain was unbearable. Getting out of bed was excruciating and walking or standing felt like torture.

In December, my doctor finally ordered an MRI. That's when I learned I had an extruded disc pressing on my L5 nerve. My doctor scheduled two follow-up appointments: one for pain management and another to evaluate me for surgery.

Then I discovered spinal decompression therapy.

I never ended up needing either of those appointments.

Now, I'm walking regularly, standing up straight—something I couldn't do before. When I first sought help, I was so hunched over that I had to use a cane just to move forward.

Because of the pain, I hadn't exercised in months. But now, I'm doing 75 Hard and I've even gotten back to lifting weights.

I'm so thankful I found this place."

— Amanda, San Diego, CA

"HE SAVED MY LIFE"

"There is not enough room to explain the relief Dr. Boelk has brought to me and my entire family. I found him after a year of sciatic pain. Couldn't play the sports I loved, no hockey, golf or surfing.

The pain shooting from my hip to my left foot was to the point of unbearable.

I couldn't get a solid night's sleep and didn't care to go on.

But then I met the Doc.

I tell people regularly, he saved my life.

So without a doubt, if you are on the verge of surgery, don't do it until you give this Dr. a chance to examine you first.

He is honest. He will tell you if you are beyond repair.

I trust him with my life and my back."
