Many people between the ages of 30-50 will suffer needlessly from sciatica. Of course people younger and older can also get sciatica and no matter what age you are, it is a truly severe and debilitating condition. It can be resolved however with the correct course of treatment. Sciatica can develop with a seemingly minor reason, such as bending over to pick up a pencil off the floor or even sneezing. The main reason for the sciatica pain is due to the disc in between our spinal vertebrae being compressed and pushing against the sciatic nerve and irritating the nerve, hence the term "sciatica" - irritation of the sciatic nerve.
Sharp, stabbing, burning sensations in the back, buttocks and down 1 or both legs are classic symptoms of sciatica. Many times the condition is treated with drugs, injections and surgery. These treatments aim at focusing on the symptoms only rather than the cause. Why did the disc get compressed in the first p[lace? How do we go about treating the cause? How can we keep the pain away? These treatments typically do not successfully get rid of sciatica and if they do, it is only short term until the pain returns.
To try and get pain relief there are several things you can do on your own:
-Have good posture, do not slouch or round your back
-Avoid excessive bending forward at the low back
-Keep your chest upright and your hips underneath you when you stand to sit and sit to stand
-Avoid prolonged sitting
-Take daily walks
-Keep your body hydrated with lots of water 1/2 your weight in ounces of water per day.
If you have tried these techniques and they have not helped and or they have helped but not to the extent that you hoped and or you want to correct the reason for the pain, then you can give our office a call.
We have been specializing in sciatica treatment for 15 years and have performed over 23,000 treatments. We focus on correcting the cause of the pain and keeping the pain away fast. We have many different therapies and techniques to help with sciatica but the most important is called NSSD. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a researched by Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University treatment that is designed to gently stretch the lower spine to allow oxygen, water and nutrients to get back into the disc, suction the disc off of the nerve and correct the actual cause of the sciatica pain. This is very different than traction or inversion tables. With traction and inversion tables, the spinal muscles have a very hard time relaxing and therefore the amount of suction on the disc is very limited. With spinal decompression, there are 3 computers on the machine, 1 of the computers sole job is to monitor the muscles in the spine 16 times per second to ensure the muscles are fully relaxed thus allowing what we call negative pressure within the spine and creating a true suction or "vacuum" to pull the disc off on the sciatic nerve while also allowing proper oxygen, water and nutrient exchange into the disc for healing and flushing out the inflammation around the disc and nerve that is causing the pain.
"Dr. Boelk & his staff are by far the BEST at spinal decompression. I walked into his office unable to sit to do my job, where I was having to lay each day & within a couple of weeks he helped me with being able to sit again. His attention to you & the way he will make you feel is unparalleled. First of all, he has suffered from some severe back issues, so his empathy is very high. Secondly, he is extremely caring & genuinely wants to help people. I’ve never worked with a doctor who has cared as much and made me feel like I was his only patient before. There would be 4 people there at the same time, and he still made me feel this way. I guess I just cannot thank him enough & cannot recommend him enough. He is an angel on earth. If you visit him, please listen to him & follow his instructions. He knows what’s best for you. -Erin T
"Dr. Boelk is professional and kind. He has the health of his patients as his top priority. The decompression treatments, exercises, and diet adjustments he recommended and administered have so diminished my back pain that I can sleep again. Chiropractic adjustments did not help my lower back. Decompression did. I highly recommend Dr. Boelk"
"Dr Boelk is thorough, technical, and explains everything very well. Excellent bedside manner and all the staff are very nice. Decompression treatment is effective and I have no more neck pain." - Andre G.
