DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE TREATMENT WITHOUT SURGERY IN SAN DIEGO, CA

DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE TREATMENT WITHOUT SURGERY IN SAN DIEGO, CA

"MY MRI SAYS I HAVE DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE. SHOULD I BE WORRIED?"

One of the most common things Dr. Cassidy Boelk hears from new patients is:

"My MRI says I have degenerative disc disease."

Usually, that statement is followed by:

"Does that mean my spine is deteriorating?"

"Is this just because I'm getting older?"

"Am I eventually going to need surgery?"

"Can anything actually be done?"

The good news is that degenerative disc disease (DDD) is one of the most common spinal conditions evaluated at The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego.

It is also one of the most misunderstood.

Many people hear the word "disease" and immediately assume something is seriously wrong.

In reality, degenerative disc disease is a term often used to describe changes that occur within spinal discs over time.

However, just because degeneration is present does not necessarily mean surgery is required.

Many patients are surprised to learn that conservative treatment options may still exist.

"LAST YEAR THE PAIN WAS UNBEARABLE"

Last year, I spent three months constantly going back and forth between doctor's appointments and urgent care. The pain was unbearable—I was taking medication regularly just to get through the day. Getting out of bed was excruciating, and walking or standing felt like torture. Every step filled me with dread.

In December, my doctor finally ordered an MRI. That's when I learned I had an extruded disc pressing on my L5 nerve, which affects the leg and foot. My doctor scheduled two follow-up appointments: one for pain management (spinal injections), and another to evaluate me for surgery.

Then I discovered spinal decompression therapy. I was thrilled to find a non-invasive alternative.

I never ended up needing either of those appointments.

Now, I'm walking regularly, standing up straight—something I couldn't do before. When I first sought help, I was so hunched over that I had to use a cane just to move forward. Because of the pain, I hadn't exercised in months. But now, I'm doing a program called 75 Hard which requires not one but two 45-minute workouts per day, and I've even gotten back to lifting weights.

I'm so thankful I found this place. It's conveniently located near my work, which makes it easy to fit sessions into my lunch break. Dr. Boelk and the staff are incredibly friendly and polite—it's always a pleasure to come in.

The environment is so relaxing that I look forward to each visit. I truly thank God for leading me to this alternative. It's made such a difference in my life.

WHAT IS DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE?

Your spinal discs act as cushions between the bones of your spine.

These discs help:

✔ Absorb Shock

✔ Allow Movement

✔ Create Space For Nerves

✔ Support Daily Activities

Over time, discs may begin losing:

  • Water Content

  • Height

  • Flexibility

As this occurs, MRI reports may describe:

✔ Degenerative Disc Disease

✔ Disc Degeneration

✔ Disc Height Loss

✔ Disc Desiccation

✔ Disc Space Narrowing

For some people, these findings cause very little discomfort.

For others, degeneration may contribute to:

✔ Low Back Pain

✔ Neck Pain

✔ Sciatica

✔ Numbness

✔ Tingling

✔ Foraminal Stenosis

✔ Nerve Irritation

WHY DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE CAN LEAD TO OTHER PROBLEMS

One reason DDD becomes important is because degeneration often does not occur in isolation.

As disc height decreases, several things may happen:

✔ Increased Stress On Joints

✔ Increased Stress On Ligaments

✔ Reduced Space For Nerves

✔ Foraminal Narrowing

✔ Increased Disc Bulging

✔ Increased Risk Of Nerve Irritation

This is one reason many patients diagnosed with degenerative disc disease eventually develop symptoms such as:

  • Sciatica

  • Burning Leg Pain

  • Foot Numbness

  • Tingling

  • Arm Pain

  • Hand Numbness

The degeneration itself may not always be the primary problem.

The secondary effects often create the symptoms patients notice most.

"I'VE BEEN TO OTHER PLACES WITH SUB PAR MACHINES"

I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Boelk and his staff at the Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic Center of San Diego. They have a great protocol and the best decompression machines. I've been to other places with sub par machines and didn't get any benefit.

Dr. Boelk is very attentive and cares about each person, you can see it in how he interacts with everyone. Been undergoing treatment for about 12 sessions now and the sciatica is gone and I'm almost back to normal, didn't think it would ever heal but even after the first session I had tremendous relief and could sleep mostly pain free for the first time in months.

Definitely worth the investment! Thank you!

5 THINGS SOME DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE PATIENTS MAY TRY AT HOME

⚠️ These suggestions are not intended to replace a proper evaluation.

1. Walk Daily

Movement is often better tolerated than prolonged inactivity.

2. Avoid Excessive Sitting

Many patients report increased symptoms after sitting for long periods.

3. Stay Hydrated

Healthy discs depend heavily on fluid exchange.

4. Improve Hip Mobility

Restricted hip movement may increase stress on the lower back.

5. Focus On Core Stability

Better support often improves movement efficiency and may reduce stress on spinal structures.

WHY SOME PATIENTS WITH DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE SEEK NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION

One of the most common goals of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) is to reduce mechanical stress within injured spinal segments.

At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Boelk exclusively utilizes DRX9000 Spinal Decompression Systems.

The office currently operates:

✔ 4 Lumbar DRX9000 Systems

✔ 3 Cervical DRX9000 Systems

✔ 7 DRX9000 Systems Total

making it one of the largest Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression facilities in California.

Many patients seek consultation to determine whether they may be a candidate for:

✔ Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

✔ DRX9000 Treatment

✔ Conservative Disc Care

before considering injections or surgery.

Not every patient is a candidate.

This is why proper evaluation remains critical.

He understands firsthand:

✔ Chronic Pain

✔ Fear Of Surgery

✔ Physical Limitations

✔ Frustration With Slow Recovery

✔ The Desire To Return To Sports And Activity

Those experiences ultimately inspired a career helping patients suffering from spinal disc injuries explore non-surgical treatment options whenever appropriate.

Today, Dr. Boelk is:

NOT EVERY PATIENT IS A CANDIDATE

One thing many patients appreciate about Dr. Boelk is honesty.

Not every patient qualifies.

Not every patient can avoid surgery.

And not every patient should undergo spinal decompression treatment.

One consultation patient shared:

"Very nice Dr. and Honest! I would definitely recommend anyone who hasn't had metal put in there back in a surgery to go to him and give his program a shot. I believe it would definitely help. Just not in my personal case. As I have a lot of hardware in my back. But I'm glad I took the time to meet with him. It was very informative all around."

"I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY I DID NOT HAVE SURGERY"

Dr. Boelk and his team are the best in the business! I have had lower back problems for over 5 years and been to 6 other doctors seeking options other than surgery.

I came in early January not able to bend and walking with a limp.

By February I was able to bend again with minimal pain and by March I am now able to bend without any pain and am able to walk normally.

I am EXTREMELY happy I did not have surgery and found Dr. Boelk.
