Can a Herniated Disc Heal Without Surgery? – Kearny Mesa
Can a Herniated Disc Heal Without Surgery?
If you've recently been diagnosed with a herniated disc, you're probably asking yourself one question above all others:
"Do I really need surgery?"
It's one of the most common questions Dr. Cassidy James Boelk, DC hears from new patients visiting our office from Kearny Mesa and throughout San Diego.
The answer isn't always simple.
For many people, the answer is no—surgery may not be necessary.
In fact, many herniated discs improve with appropriate conservative treatment, allowing patients to avoid surgery altogether.
That doesn't mean every herniated disc heals on its own, and it certainly doesn't mean surgery is never the right choice. Some patients truly require surgery because of significant nerve compression, progressive muscle weakness, or other serious neurological findings.
The key is determining which category you fall into.
At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, located just minutes from Kearny Mesa, Dr. Boelk has spent more than 22 years evaluating patients with herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica. Every consultation begins with one goal:
Identify what's causing your symptoms and determine the treatment that's most appropriate for your condition.
Quick Answer
Yes.
Many herniated discs can improve without surgery.
Your body has an amazing ability to heal, and many patients experience significant improvements through conservative treatment.
Whether your disc is likely to heal depends on several factors, including:
✔ The size of the herniation
✔ Whether a spinal nerve is compressed
✔ The severity of your symptoms
✔ Whether muscle weakness is present
✔ How long you've had pain
✔ Which treatments you've already tried
That's why an accurate diagnosis is the first—and most important—step.

"I Was Certain I Needed Surgery."
Many people who visit our office have already been told surgery may be their only option.
One of those patients was Ricky Mims.
"I love The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego because of the wonderful things they do. I have to admit I had my doubts because of the price. I had a lumbar discectomy in 2019 and reinjured my lumbar spine in 2022. I was certain I would require surgery again. Luckily, thanks to the services rendered by Dr. Boelk and his amazing staff, my pain improved, I'm back at work, and I did not require surgery. After trying numerous alternative therapies and western medicine, I now know this is the treatment for me regardless of the price."
While every patient's outcome is different, Ricky's experience demonstrates why it's often worthwhile to understand all appropriate conservative treatment options before making the decision to undergo surgery.
What Is a Herniated Disc?
Between each bone in your spine sits an intervertebral disc.
These discs function as cushions, helping absorb shock while allowing your spine to move.
Each disc consists of:
- A durable outer ring called the annulus fibrosus
- A soft, gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus
When the outer fibers become damaged or torn, part of the inner material may push outward.
This is called a herniated disc.
Depending on its size and location, the herniation may irritate or compress a nearby spinal nerve, producing symptoms such as:
- Low back pain
- Sciatica
- Leg pain
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Muscle weakness
Interestingly, not every herniated disc causes pain.
Some people have fairly large herniations with surprisingly few symptoms, while others have relatively small disc injuries that create significant nerve irritation.
Can a Herniated Disc Actually Heal?
Yes.
In many cases, the body gradually begins breaking down and reabsorbing portions of the herniated disc over time.
As inflammation decreases and pressure on the spinal nerve improves, symptoms often become less severe.
That doesn't necessarily mean the disc completely returns to normal.
Instead, many patients experience meaningful improvements in pain, mobility, and function without requiring surgery.
How much healing occurs depends on numerous factors, including:
✔ The type of herniation
✔ Its location
✔ Your overall health
✔ The amount of nerve compression
✔ Appropriate conservative treatment
Why Do Some Herniated Discs Heal Better Than Others?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every herniated disc behaves the same way.
They don't.
Some improve remarkably well.
Others continue producing significant symptoms despite treatment.
Recovery depends on several important factors, including:
✔ The size of the herniation
✔ The location of the injury
✔ The amount of inflammation
✔ Whether nerve compression is present
✔ How long symptoms have existed
✔ Whether muscle weakness is progressing
This is why two patients with nearly identical MRI reports can have completely different symptoms—and completely different treatment recommendations.
Our job isn't simply to look at your MRI.
It's to evaluate you.
