CAN SITTING CAUSE SCIATICA? – SAN DIEGO, CA
Why Sitting May Be Making Your Sciatica Worse—and What You Can Do About It
If you've noticed that your sciatica gets worse every time you sit down, you're certainly not alone.
One of the most common things patients tell me is:
"I can walk around the house fairly well, but the minute I sit down—especially in the car or at my desk—my leg starts burning."
For some people, the pain begins within minutes.
For others, it takes 20 to 30 minutes before the numbness, tingling, or burning pain starts traveling down the leg.
If this sounds familiar, there's a good reason.
The good news?
Sitting doesn't necessarily cause sciatica.
However, it can absolutely aggravate an underlying spinal problem that's already there.

Can Sitting Really Cause Sciatica?
Not exactly.
Most of the time, sitting doesn't create sciatica—it exposes it.
If a spinal disc or nearby structure is already irritating the sciatic nerve, sitting often places additional stress on that area, making symptoms more noticeable.
That's why many people report:
✔ Burning pain down the leg
✔ Numbness in the foot
✔ Tingling
✔ Pain getting out of the car
✔ Difficulty sitting through dinner
✔ Constant shifting in their chair
Three Reasons Sitting May Make Sciatica Worse
1. Sitting Increases Pressure Inside Your Spinal Discs
Compared to standing or walking, sitting generally places greater pressure on the spinal discs.
If you have a:
- Herniated Disc
- Bulging Disc
- Disc Protrusion
- Disc Extrusion
that increased pressure may further irritate the inflamed nerve.
2. Your Pelvis Rolls Backward
Most chairs encourage a posterior pelvic tilt.
As your pelvis rolls backward, the natural curve in your lower back decreases.
This change in posture may increase stress on injured discs and surrounding tissues.
3. Your Spine Was Designed To Move
Movement helps distribute forces throughout your spine.
When you remain seated for extended periods, muscles become stiff, joints stop moving normally, and an already irritated nerve may become even more sensitive.
What Can You Do If Sitting Makes Your Sciatica Worse?
Depending on the cause of your symptoms, these strategies may help:
✔ Stand up every 30–45 minutes.
✔ Take a short walk whenever possible.
✔ Use a small lumbar support or rolled towel behind your lower back.
✔ Avoid prolonged slouching.
✔ Alternate between sitting and standing if your job allows.
These suggestions may reduce irritation, but they don't replace an accurate diagnosis.
A Common Misconception
Many people assume:
"If sitting hurts, I just need a better chair."
Sometimes that's true.
Often, it isn't.
A better chair may improve comfort, but if a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or another spinal condition is irritating the sciatic nerve, changing chairs alone usually won't solve the problem.
What Conditions Can Cause Sciatica?
Sciatica is a symptom—not a diagnosis.
Common causes include:
✔ Herniated Disc
✔ Bulging Disc
✔ Degenerative Disc Disease
✔ Foraminal Stenosis
✔ Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
✔ Less commonly, other conditions affecting the sciatic nerve
That's why identifying the underlying cause is so important before deciding on treatment.
