CAN A HERNIATED DISC HEAL WITHOUT SURGERY IN SAN DIEGO, CA
Non-Surgical Options For Herniated Discs, Sciatica, Burning Leg Pain, Numbness & Tingling
If you've recently been diagnosed with a:
✔ Herniated Disc
✔ Bulging Disc
✔ Disc Protrusion
✔ Disc Extrusion
✔ Degenerative Disc Disease
you may be wondering:
"Can this heal without surgery?"
For many patients, that is the first question that comes to mind after seeing their MRI results.
Unfortunately, many people are quickly told one of two things:
"Just give it time."
or
"You may eventually need surgery."
Not surprisingly, this leaves many patients feeling frustrated, confused, and uncertain about what to do next.
The good news?
Not every disc injury requires surgery.
And not every patient experiencing sciatica, burning leg pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness is destined for injections or surgery.
The key is determining what is actually causing your symptoms and whether you may be a candidate for conservative treatment options.

"LAST YEAR THE PAIN WAS UNBEARABLE"
Last year, I spent three months constantly going back and forth between doctor's appointments and urgent care. The pain was unbearable—I was taking medication regularly just to get through the day. Getting out of bed was excruciating, and walking or standing felt like torture. Every step filled me with dread.
In December, my doctor finally ordered an MRI. That's when I learned I had an extruded disc pressing on my L5 nerve, which affects the leg and foot. My doctor scheduled two follow-up appointments: one for pain management (spinal injections), and another to evaluate me for surgery.
Then I discovered spinal decompression therapy. I was thrilled to find a non-invasive alternative.
I never ended up needing either of those appointments.
Now, I'm walking regularly, standing up straight—something I couldn't do before. When I first sought help, I was so hunched over that I had to use a cane just to move forward. Because of the pain, I hadn't exercised in months. But now, I'm doing a program called 75 Hard which requires not one but two 45-minute workouts per day, and I've even gotten back to lifting weights.
I'm so thankful I found this place. Dr. Boelk and the staff are incredibly friendly and professional, and the treatments have made a tremendous difference in my life.

WHAT IS A HERNIATED DISC?
Your spinal discs act as shock absorbers between the bones of your spine.
Over time, injury, sports, lifting accidents, falls, repetitive stress, poor movement patterns, and degeneration can cause a disc to weaken.
When this occurs, disc material may begin pushing outward and can irritate nearby nerves.
Depending on severity, MRI reports may describe:
✔ Disc Bulge
✔ Disc Protrusion
✔ Disc Herniation
✔ Disc Extrusion
Some people have very large herniations with surprisingly little pain.
Others have relatively small disc injuries with severe symptoms.
That is why MRI findings alone rarely tell the entire story.
A proper consultation, examination, and imaging review are often necessary to determine what may actually be causing your symptoms.
WHY HERNIATED DISCS OFTEN CAUSE SCIATICA
One of the biggest misconceptions patients have is assuming the problem is where they feel the pain.
Many patients experience symptoms in:
✔ The Buttock
✔ The Thigh
✔ The Calf
✔ The Foot
✔ The Toes
Yet the actual source of the problem may be an injured disc in the lower back.
As nerves become irritated, symptoms may travel down the leg.
This is commonly referred to as sciatica.
Patients often describe:
✔ Burning Leg Pain
✔ Numbness
✔ Tingling
✔ Electrical Sensations
✔ Pins And Needles
✔ Weakness
✔ Difficulty Sitting
✔ Difficulty Driving
✔ Difficulty Sleeping
This is one reason MRI review can be extremely valuable when evaluating a patient suffering from sciatica.
"IT HURT SO BAD IT MADE ME WANT TO CRY"
I have been dealing with back pain for several years. It got so bad that I had surgery 5 years ago for a bulging disc. About 5 months ago the disc bulged again hitting my sciatic nerve creating pain in my legs that made me want to cry it hurt so bad.
After trying so many other options I was fortunate enough to find the Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic Center of San Diego.
After just a few sessions I noticed a difference. Now after being there for the past few months I'm able to go about my normal life again.
What a blessing it was to find a Dr that genuinely cares and knows how to help people in my situation. Thank you Dr Boelk!

WHY MANY HERNIATED DISCS DON'T HEAL QUICKLY
One challenge with spinal discs is their limited blood supply.
Unlike muscles, ligaments, and many other tissues throughout the body, spinal discs rely heavily on:
✔ Fluid Exchange
✔ Nutrient Exchange
✔ Oxygen Exchange
✔ Healthy Movement
Many patients find themselves trapped in a cycle of:
Feeling Better
Then Flare Up
Feeling Better Again
Then Another Flare Up
This cycle can continue for months or even years.
Many begin to believe nothing can be done.
In reality, many people simply have not identified or addressed the primary source of their symptoms.
5 THINGS SOME HERNIATED DISC PATIENTS MAY TRY AT HOME
⚠️ These suggestions are not intended to replace a proper evaluation.
1. Avoid Prolonged Sitting
Many patients report increased symptoms while sitting for extended periods.
2. Walk Frequently
Walking is often tolerated better than prolonged sitting and may help some patients remain active.
3. Stay Hydrated
Healthy discs depend heavily on fluid exchange.
4. Monitor Symptom Triggers
Pay attention to activities that consistently aggravate symptoms.
5. Avoid Repeated Bending And Twisting If Symptoms Increase
Many patients unknowingly continue irritating injured tissues throughout the day.

"Very nice Dr. and Honest! I would definitely recommend anyone who hasn't had metal put in their back in a surgery to go to him and give his program a shot. I believe it would definitely help. Just not in my personal case. As I have a lot of hardware in my back. But I'm glad I took the time to meet with him. It was very informative all around."
