Burning Pain Down My Leg From My Back – San Diego, CA
One of the most common things patients say when dealing with severe sciatica is:
“It feels like my leg is on fire.”
Others describe:
- burning pain into the calf
- heat sensations into the foot
- electrical pain down the leg
- tingling and numbness
- pain sitting or driving
- symptoms worsening at night
- pain that shoots down the leg unexpectedly
Many patients become frustrated because:
- stretching only helps temporarily
- medications wear off
- injections don’t fully solve the problem
- symptoms keep repeatedly returning
At The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego, Dr. Cassidy Boelk DC regularly evaluates patients suffering from:
- burning sciatica pain
- disc bulges
- herniated discs
- nerve irritation
- numbness and tingling
- chronic low back pain
- severe sitting intolerance
As a Certified Spinal Decompression Doctor, Certified Pain-Free Performance Specialist, founder of the Spinal Decompression Training Academy, and a doctor who has personally performed over 100,000 spinal decompression treatments, Dr. Boelk focuses heavily on helping patients determine whether spinal disc pressure and nerve irritation may actually be contributing to symptoms.
“The Pain Shooting Into My Leg Was Unbearable”
“There is not enough room to explain the relief Dr. Boelk has brought to me and my entire family. I found him after a year of sciatic pain. Couldn't play the sports I loved, no hockey, golf or surfing. The pain shooting from my hip to my left foot was to the point of unbearable.
I had been visiting chiropractors since I was 18, temporary relief, but nothing consistent. Acupuncture helped a bit, physical therapy was unmanageable. I couldn't get a solid night sleep and didn't care to go on. But Then I met the Dr! I tell people regularly, he saved my life.”
— Jayson Yavorsky, San Diego, CA
Many patients are surprised to learn that burning leg pain is often associated with irritated spinal nerves — not just “tight muscles.”
Why Does Sciatica Sometimes Burn?
In many cases, burning pain may occur when spinal nerves become irritated or inflamed.
Depending on:
- disc involvement
- inflammation
- sitting stress
- spinal positioning
- nerve compression
- movement mechanics
patients may experience:
- burning pain
- electrical sensations
- tingling
- numbness
- calf tightness
- weakness
- pain into the foot
This is one reason Dr. Boelk evaluates:
- posture
- sitting tolerance
- spinal loading
- movement mechanics
- spinal stability
- hip mobility
- MRI findings if available
rather than simply treating all sciatica the same way.
2 Things Some Patients May Try at Home
⚠️ These movements are NOT appropriate for everyone.
If symptoms worsen significantly:
- stop immediately
- avoid pushing through severe pain
- seek proper evaluation
1. Relaxed Prone Lying
Some patients dealing with disc-related sciatica may temporarily feel relief laying relaxed on their stomach for several minutes.
This should be:
- passive
- relaxed
- comfortable
NOT:
- forceful
- painful
- aggressive extension stretching
2. Gentle Standing Back Bends
For SOME patients, gentle standing back bends may temporarily help reduce irritation aggravated by prolonged sitting or bending forward.
⚠️ Stop immediately if symptoms worsen further down the leg.
These movements are sometimes directional-preference based, which is why proper assessment matters.
“The First Night I Slept Without Pain”
“I herniated my L4-L5 disc. The MRI showed it was 0.9 centimeters out of place and they were surprised I was even walking.
I had terrible sciatica and could barely sleep.
After wasting money somewhere else, I came here.
The first night after treatment I was able to sleep throughout the night without pain.
After about three months of treatment, I was able to surf again, hike again, and get back to normal activities.”
— Michael Langsdale, San Diego, CA
Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore
Seek proper evaluation if you experience:
- worsening numbness
- increasing weakness
- loss of balance
- pain progressively worsening
- severe night pain
- bowel or bladder changes
These symptoms may indicate more significant nerve irritation or compression.
Why Proper Evaluation Matters
Many patients continue chasing:
- temporary relief
- generalized stretching
- random exercises
- short-term symptom reduction
…without determining WHY the nerve keeps becoming irritated.
At our office, Dr. Boelk evaluates:
- spinal disc involvement
- nerve irritation
- posture
- sitting intolerance
- movement dysfunction
- spinal stability
- MRI findings if available
to determine what may actually be contributing to symptoms.
