Understanding the Anatomy of a Spinal Disc
Between each vertebra in your spine sits an intervertebral disc.
These discs act as cushions, absorbing shock while allowing your spine to bend, twist, and move comfortably.
Each disc contains:
- A strong outer ring called the annulus fibrosus
- A soft, gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus
As we age, these discs naturally lose some of their water content and elasticity.
Combined with years of bending, lifting, sitting, and everyday activities, this can increase the likelihood of disc injuries.
What Is a Bulging Disc?
A bulging disc occurs when the disc extends beyond its normal boundaries without tearing.
Think of pressing down on a balloon.
The balloon changes shape, but it doesn't rupture.
That's similar to a bulging disc.
Many bulging discs are found on MRI scans in people who have absolutely no symptoms.
However, if the bulge narrows the space around a nearby spinal nerve, pain, numbness, tingling, or sciatica can develop.
What Is a Herniated Disc?
A herniated disc occurs when the tough outer fibers of the disc develop a tear.
Through that opening, part of the soft inner material pushes outward.
If this material irritates or compresses a spinal nerve, symptoms may include:
- Sciatica
- Arm pain
- Neck pain
- Leg pain
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Muscle weakness
Just because an MRI shows a herniated disc doesn't automatically mean it's responsible for your pain.
Many herniated discs are completely painless.
Which One Is Worse?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that herniated discs are always more serious than bulging discs.
The reality is much more nuanced.
A relatively small bulging disc pressing directly on a nerve can produce severe pain.
Meanwhile, a much larger herniated disc located away from important nerves may produce very few symptoms.
The questions that matter most are:

✔ Is muscle weakness present?
✔ Are your symptoms improving or worsening?
