Best Sleeping Positions for Sciatica, Bulging Discs, and Herniated Discs – San Diego, CA

Does Your Sciatica Get Worse at Night?

If you suffer from sciatica, a bulging disc, or a herniated disc, you're not alone. One of the most common questions I hear from patients is:

"What's the best sleeping position for my back?"

The good news is that the right sleeping position may help reduce pressure on irritated spinal discs and nerves, allowing you to sleep more comfortably.

The important thing to understand, however, is this:

Sleeping positions may reduce your symptoms...but they usually do NOT correct the underlying problem if your pain is coming from an injured spinal disc.

Before we get started, watch the complete video below where I explain exactly why these sleeping positions may help and, more importantly, when it's time to seek further evaluation.

Why Does Sciatica Often Feel Worse at Night?

Many people notice their back or leg pain becomes worse once they lie down.

There are several reasons for this.

When you stop moving, irritated nerves often become more noticeable. Remaining in one position for several hours may increase stress on already inflamed tissues, while certain sleeping positions can place additional pressure on an injured spinal disc or irritated nerve.

The goal isn't simply to find the most comfortable position.

The goal is to reduce unnecessary stress on your spine while allowing your body the best opportunity to rest.

⭐ Patient Success Story

*"For the first time in 10 years, I am completely pain-free. My sciatica is gone, and I no longer have back pain.

Before finding Dr. Boelk, I tried chiropractic care, acupuncture, pain medications, and several other therapies that simply didn't work. I was one step away from back surgery when I discovered spinal decompression treatment at The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego.

The results have been incredible. Every visit was comfortable, relaxing, and completely pain-free. Dr. Boelk and Patty always took the time to explain everything and made me feel genuinely cared for throughout the process.

They are warm, welcoming, and truly dedicated to helping their patients.

Thank you, Dr. Boelk and Patty!"*

✅ Best Sleeping Position #1

Sleep on Your Back

For many patients...

Sleeping on your back is often one of the most comfortable positions.

What To Do

Place one or two pillows underneath your knees.

This slightly bends your hips and knees, helping reduce stress on your lower back while decreasing pressure on irritated spinal discs and nerves.

Why It May Help

✅ Helps reduce stress on the lumbar spine.

✅ May decrease pressure around irritated nerves.

✅ Often allows the muscles in your lower back to relax.

✅ Best Sleeping Position #2

Sleep on Your Side

If you're naturally a side sleeper...

You don't necessarily need to change.

Simply place a pillow between your knees.

This helps keep your pelvis aligned while reducing twisting through your lower back.

Why It May Help

✅ Helps maintain better spinal alignment.

✅ Reduces unnecessary rotation.

✅ May decrease irritation around the sciatic nerve.

❌ Sleeping Position to Avoid

Sleeping on Your Stomach

Whenever possible...

Try to avoid sleeping on your stomach.

For many people with bulging discs, herniated discs, and sciatica, this position increases the arch in the lower back while forcing the neck to remain rotated for hours.

That combination may increase stress on already irritated tissues.

If you've always slept on your stomach...

Don't panic.

Simply work toward gradually transitioning to sleeping on your side or back.

Do Sleeping Positions Heal a Bulging Disc?

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions we hear.

Unfortunately...

No.

Sleeping positions may reduce irritation...

They do not repair an injured spinal disc.

If your symptoms are coming from:

  • A bulging disc

  • A herniated disc

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Foraminal stenosis

  • A compressed spinal nerve

The underlying condition still needs to be properly diagnosed.

When Should You See a Specialist?

If your symptoms continue despite changing your sleeping position...

If your pain continues shooting down your leg...

If you're developing numbness...

Weakness...

Or your symptoms keep returning...

Don't ignore them.

Make sure you're evaluated by a healthcare provider who specializes in diagnosing and treating spinal disc injuries.

An accurate diagnosis is always the first step toward determining the most appropriate treatment.

⭐ Patient Success Story

*"I have had an outstanding experience with Dr. Boelk and his staff at The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego.

They follow a very structured treatment protocol and utilize the best spinal decompression equipment available. I've been treated elsewhere using lower-quality decompression systems and never experienced meaningful improvement.

After about 12 treatments, my sciatica was gone and I was nearly back to normal. Honestly, I wasn't sure I would ever heal. What surprised me most was that after my very first treatment, I experienced significant relief and was able to sleep mostly pain-free for the first time in months.

The improvement has allowed me to get back to hiking, traveling, and enjoying life again.

This treatment was one of the best investments I've ever made."*

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a new mattress fix my sciatica?

Sometimes a supportive mattress can improve comfort, but it usually won't correct the underlying cause if your symptoms are coming from a bulging or herniated disc.

Should I sleep with a pillow under my knees?

If you're a back sleeper, many patients find this position much more comfortable because it may reduce stress on the lower back.

Is side sleeping better than back sleeping?

Both positions can be helpful.

The best position is usually the one that places the least stress on your spine while allowing you to sleep comfortably.

Should I keep exercising if I have sciatica?

That depends entirely on your diagnosis.

Walking and gentle movement are often beneficial, but every condition is different. Speak with a healthcare provider familiar with spinal disc injuries before beginning an exercise program.

⭐ Our Honest Recommendation

One of the things patients appreciate most about our office is our honesty.

We don't believe everyone is a candidate for spinal decompression.

If we believe another treatment—or even surgery—is the better option, we'll tell you.

One patient shared this after we recommended against treatment in our office:

"Very nice Dr. and Honest! I would definitely recommend anyone who hasn't had metal put in there back in a surgery to go to him and give his program a shot. I believe it would definitely help. Just not in my personal case. As I have a lot of hardware in my back. But I'm glad I took the time to meet with him. It was very informative all around."
