ARM NUMBNESS & TINGLING TREATMENT – SAN DIEGO, CA

ARM NUMBNESS & TINGLING TREATMENT – SAN DIEGO, CA

Could A Neck Problem Be Causing Your Arm, Hand Or Finger Symptoms?

Many people assume numbness or tingling in the arm means there is something wrong with the arm itself.

In reality, some cases of arm numbness, hand tingling, burning pain, or weakness may actually originate in the neck.

Every week, patients visit The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego complaining of symptoms such as:

✔ Arm Numbness

✔ Tingling In The Hand

✔ Tingling In The Fingers

✔ Burning Pain Down The Arm

✔ Shoulder Blade Pain

✔ Neck Pain

✔ Hand Weakness

✔ Difficulty Sleeping

Some patients have already been diagnosed with:

  • Cervical Disc Herniation

  • Cervical Disc Bulge

  • Pinched Nerve In The Neck

  • Cervical Radiculopathy

  • Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Others have no idea their neck could even be related to their symptoms.

One of the first goals is determining where the symptoms are actually coming from.

"SURGERY WAS MY NEXT OPTION"

**“I’ve been seeing Dr. Boelk for almost 4 years and it’s been one of the best medical decisions I’ve made in my life. I was diagnosed with severe cervical disc bulging with dizziness, neck pain, and arm/hand numbness and tingling. After trying different chiropractors, traction machines, and pain management doctors, I was told surgery was my next option.

Then I found Dr. Boelk, who explained how spinal decompression could help. My pain level went from a 7 down to a 3 after a few intensive sessions, and then to a 1–2 with maintenance care. During my last MRI, the images showed my cervical spine back in normal position.

I’m continuing maintenance and I’m thankful I found him. He is practical, professional, and one of my favorite doctors. I highly recommend giving him a chance.”**

CAN A NECK PROBLEM REALLY CAUSE ARM NUMBNESS?

Yes.

In fact, it is one of the most common causes Dr. Boelk sees.

The nerves that travel into the shoulder, arm, hand, and fingers begin in the neck.

When a cervical disc becomes injured and starts irritating a nearby nerve, symptoms may travel:

✔ Into The Shoulder

✔ Into The Shoulder Blade

✔ Down The Arm

✔ Into The Forearm

✔ Into The Hand

✔ Into The Fingers

This is why some patients experience severe arm symptoms despite having little or no arm injury.

The source of the problem may actually be located in the cervical spine.

WHAT IS CERVICAL RADICULOPATHY?

Cervical radiculopathy is a term used when a nerve in the neck becomes irritated or compressed.

Patients may experience:

  • Numbness

  • Tingling

  • Burning Pain

  • Weakness

  • Loss Of Grip Strength

  • Pain Radiating Into The Arm

Depending on which nerve is affected, symptoms may occur in different parts of the arm and hand.

This is one reason a detailed examination and MRI review are often important.

WHY DO CERVICAL DISC INJURIES OFTEN BECOME CHRONIC?

One of the biggest challenges with spinal discs is their limited blood supply.

Most tissues in the body receive direct blood flow carrying:

  • Oxygen

  • Nutrients

  • Growth Factors

  • Healing Components

Spinal discs are different.

Instead, they rely heavily on:

  • Fluid Exchange

  • Nutrient Diffusion

  • Oxygen Diffusion

  • Movement

Think of a sponge.

When a sponge remains compressed, it becomes more difficult for fluid to move through it.

Many clinicians believe a similar process may occur within injured spinal discs.

This may help explain why some neck injuries continue causing symptoms long after the initial injury occurred.

WHY DOES ARM NUMBNESS OFTEN GET WORSE AT NIGHT?

Many patients report:

"My arm goes numb while sleeping."

"I wake up with tingling in my fingers."

"My hand feels asleep in the morning."

There are several potential reasons.

For some patients:

  • Sleeping Position

  • Neck Position

  • Shoulder Position

  • Existing Nerve Irritation

may contribute to symptoms becoming more noticeable during the night.

This is one reason Dr. Boelk frequently discusses sleeping posture and positioning with patients suffering from cervical conditions.

WHY SOME TREATMENTS HELP TEMPORARILY

Many patients have already tried:

  • Massage Therapy

  • Chiropractic Care

  • Physical Therapy

  • Pain Management

  • Traction

  • Exercise Programs

Many of these treatments can provide significant benefits.

However, some patients have multiple overlapping issues occurring simultaneously:

  • Disc Injury

  • Nerve Irritation

  • Postural Problems

  • Muscle Weakness

  • Joint Dysfunction

  • Reduced Stability

Addressing only one factor may not completely resolve the problem.

This is one reason symptoms often improve temporarily and then return.

WHY NON-SURGICAL CERVICAL DECOMPRESSION WAS DEVELOPED

One goal of cervical spinal decompression is to reduce pressure affecting injured discs and nearby nerves.

The goal is not simply to mask symptoms.

The goal is to improve the mechanical environment surrounding the injured area.

Many clinicians believe reducing pressure within the disc may help create a more favorable environment for recovery.

While no treatment can guarantee healing, this concept has become increasingly popular among patients seeking conservative options before considering surgery.

"HE COULD NOT TREAT ME"

One reason many patients trust Dr. Boelk is because he is willing to tell patients when treatment is not appropriate.

**“I decided to see Dr. Boelk after a pretty gnarly motocoss neck injury. At the Hospital I was at, I felt I was getting pressured into a surgery which I refused. A friend of a friend referred him after Dr. Boelk successfully treated his broken back.

Dr. Boelk is a compassionate individual who truly cares about his patients. He looked at my MRI images, explained what he saw and potential routes for recovery. He could not treat me as I have to wait until the fracture in my neck heals, but the level of professionalism, compassion, caring and knowledge displayed by him was exceptional.

He also recommended to seek an additional opinion form another neurosurgeon. My experience was that he really cares and he's not someone who would take advantage of the situation someone's in (unlike some other doctors). I will definitely be back and already recommended him to others as well! Thank you Dr. Boelk!”**
