ALTERNATIVES TO BACK SURGERY – SAN DIEGO, CA

ALTERNATIVES TO BACK SURGERY – SAN DIEGO, CA

Do You Really Need Surgery, Or Are There Other Options Worth Exploring First?

If you've been told you may need back surgery, you're probably dealing with more than just pain.

You're likely dealing with uncertainty.

Questions such as:

  • Do I really need surgery?
  • Is there another option?
  • What happens if I wait?
  • What are the risks?
  • What if surgery doesn't work?
  • Should I get a second opinion?

are incredibly common.

Every week I meet patients who have already undergone:

  • MRI Studies
  • Surgical Consultations
  • Pain Management Evaluations
  • Epidural Injections
  • Physical Therapy
  • Chiropractic Care

Many have been told surgery is their next step.

Some ultimately require surgery.

Others discover they still have conservative options worth exploring.

The challenge is determining which category you fall into.

"FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 10 YEARS, I AM TOTALLY PAIN FREE"

“For the first time in 10 years, I am totally pain free. My sciatica is gone and I have no more back pain! I've tried other chiropractic procedures, acupuncture, pain killing drugs, and other type therapies that just did not work. I was one step before back surgery, until I discovered Dr. Boelk's therapy and his procedure, and it's a miracle! My office visits were always so relaxing and comfortable, there was never any pain involved with the therapy. Dr. Boelk and Patty are so welcoming and warm and ready to explain everything that's going on. They both take such good care of you! Thank you Dr. Boelk and Patty!”

WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR ALTERNATIVES TO BACK SURGERY

Most patients are not against surgery.

They simply want to know:

"Have I explored all reasonable options first?"

That is a very different question.

Surgery may absolutely be the correct decision in some cases.

However, many patients feel uncomfortable proceeding until they understand:

  • Their Diagnosis
  • Their MRI Findings
  • Their Risks
  • Their Alternatives
  • Their Prognosis

This is where education becomes important.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY CAUSING THE PAIN?

Many patients assume the MRI finding is the problem.

The reality is often more complicated.

For example:

A patient may have:

  • Disc Herniation
  • Disc Bulge
  • Disc Extrusion
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Foraminal Stenosis
  • Spinal Stenosis

But the symptoms are often coming from nerve irritation.

This is why patients experience:

✔ Sciatica

✔ Burning Leg Pain

✔ Foot Numbness

✔ Tingling

✔ Weakness

✔ Difficulty Sitting

✔ Difficulty Driving

✔ Difficulty Sleeping

Understanding what is truly causing the symptoms is one of the most important parts of determining whether surgery is necessary.

WHY DISC INJURIES CAN BECOME CHRONIC

One of the biggest challenges with disc injuries is their limited blood supply.

Most tissues in the body receive direct blood flow carrying:

  • Oxygen
  • Nutrients
  • Growth Factors
  • Healing Components

Spinal discs are different.

Instead, they rely heavily on:

  • Fluid Exchange
  • Nutrient Diffusion
  • Oxygen Diffusion
  • Movement

Think about a sponge.

When a sponge is repeatedly compressed and never allowed to re-expand, fluid movement becomes restricted.

Many researchers believe a similar concept may occur with injured spinal discs.

This is one reason some disc injuries continue causing problems long after the original injury occurred.

WHY OTHER TREATMENTS SOMETIMES HELP BUT THE PAIN RETURNS

One of the most common things I hear is:

"I felt better, but then it came back."

This can happen with:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Massage Therapy
  • Chiropractic Care
  • Epidural Injections
  • Exercise Programs
  • Medications

That doesn't mean those treatments failed.

Many are extremely valuable.

The challenge is that many patients have multiple problems occurring simultaneously.

A patient may have:

  • Disc Injury
  • Nerve Irritation
  • Weak Core Muscles
  • Hip Weakness
  • Poor Stability
  • Limited Mobility

Addressing only one piece of the puzzle may not fully resolve the problem.

"THE SCIATICA IS GONE AND I'M ALMOST BACK TO NORMAL"

“I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Boelk and his staff at the Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic Center of San Diego. They have a great protocol and the best decompression machines. I’ve been to other places with sub par machines and didn’t get any benefit. Dr. Boelk is very attentive and cares about each person, you can see it in how he interacts with everyone. Been undergoing treatment for about 12 sessions now and the sciatica is gone and I’m almost back to normal, didn’t think it would ever heal but even after the first session I had tremendous relief and could sleep mostly pain free for the first time in months. Definitely worth the investment! Thank you!”

MY PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

Part of the reason I became passionate about helping patients suffering from disc injuries is because I've personally experienced significant spinal injuries.

At age 16, I fractured my L5 vertebra.

Later in life I experienced significant neck and back disc injuries as well.

I understand firsthand:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Fear Of Surgery
  • Recovery Challenges
  • Activity Limitations
  • Frustration When Progress Stalls

Those experiences helped shape the way I evaluate and educate patients today.

5 THINGS SOME DISC PATIENTS MAY TRY AT HOME

⚠️ These suggestions are not intended to replace proper evaluation.

1. Avoid Prolonged Sitting

2. Walk Frequently

3. Stay Hydrated

4. Monitor Symptom Triggers

5. Try Gentle Self-Decompression Using A Chair

Many patients report temporary relief by gently pushing upward through the armrests of a sturdy chair for 15–60 seconds if comfortable and tolerated.

"HE REALLY CARES AND HE'S NOT SOMEONE WHO WOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE"

**“I decided to see Dr. Boelk after a pretty gnarly motocoss neck injury. At the Hospital I was at, I felt I was getting pressured into a surgery which I refused. A friend of a friend referred him after Dr. Boelk successfully treated his broken back.

Dr. Boelk is a compassionate individual who truly cares about his patients. He looked at my MRI images, explained what he saw and potential routes for recovery. He could not treat me as I have to wait until the fracture in my neck heals, but the level of professionalism, compassion, caring and knowledge displayed by him was exceptional.

He also recommended to seek an additional opinion form another neurosurgeon. My experience was that he really cares and he's not someone who would take advantage of the situation someone's in (unlike some other doctors). I will definitely be back and already recommended him to others as well! Thank you Dr. Boelk!”**
