3 Reasons Your Low Back Pain Is Worse Sitting Than Walking – San Diego, CA
Do you notice that your low back pain becomes worse when sitting, but feels better when you get up and walk around?
If so, you're not alone.
This is one of the most common complaints we hear from patients at The Spinal Decompression & Chiropractic Center of San Diego. Many people are surprised to learn that sitting can actually place more stress on the lower back than standing or walking.
Whether you are driving, working at a desk, sitting on the couch, or traveling on an airplane, prolonged sitting can aggravate certain spinal conditions and contribute to ongoing pain.
Below are three common reasons why your low back pain may be worse sitting than walking.
1. Sitting Increases Pressure On The Spinal Discs
One of the primary functions of the spinal discs is to absorb shock and distribute forces throughout the spine.
Research has demonstrated that sitting can increase pressure within the lumbar discs compared to standing. If a disc is already injured, bulging, herniated, or degenerating, that additional pressure may increase symptoms.
This is one reason many people report that:
-
Driving aggravates their back pain
-
Sitting at a desk becomes uncomfortable
-
Getting out of a chair is painful
-
Long flights are miserable
-
Standing up provides temporary relief
When pressure increases within an injured disc, nearby pain-sensitive structures and spinal nerves may become irritated.
2. Sitting Can Increase Irritation Of Spinal Nerves
Many cases of low back pain involve more than muscles alone.
When a disc bulges or herniates, it can place pressure on nearby spinal nerves. Sitting, especially with poor posture or prolonged flexion, may further increase irritation around these sensitive structures.
As a result, patients may experience:
-
Low back pain
-
Buttock pain
-
Hip pain
-
Sciatica
-
Leg pain
-
Numbness
-
Tingling
-
Burning sensations
This is why many patients tell us:
"I can walk around the grocery store just fine, but sitting in my car for 20 minutes is unbearable."
That symptom pattern often provides important clues about the underlying cause of the problem.
3. Walking Helps Nourish The Discs
Unlike muscles, spinal discs have very limited direct blood supply.
Discs rely heavily on movement to help transport water, oxygen, and nutrients into the tissue.
Walking creates a natural pumping effect within the spine that can assist with this process. Movement also promotes circulation, reduces stiffness, and helps prevent prolonged compression of spinal structures.
While walking is not a cure for disc injuries, many patients find that gentle movement temporarily reduces symptoms compared to prolonged sitting.
This is one reason why some people feel better after a short walk but begin hurting again shortly after sitting down.
What Can You Do If Sitting Makes Your Back Pain Worse?
While every condition is different, many patients benefit from:
-
Avoiding prolonged sitting whenever possible
-
Standing up every 30 to 60 minutes
-
Taking short walking breaks throughout the day
-
Using lumbar support when sitting
-
Improving workstation ergonomics
-
Maintaining good posture
-
Following a physician-directed treatment plan
These strategies may help reduce symptoms, but they do not always address the underlying cause of the problem.
When Sitting Pain May Indicate A Disc Problem
While not everyone who has pain sitting has a disc injury, the following symptoms are commonly associated with disc-related conditions:
-
Pain worse sitting than standing
-
Pain worse driving
-
Sciatica
-
Numbness or tingling in the leg
-
Pain with bending forward
-
Symptoms that travel into the buttock or leg
-
Recurring episodes of low back pain
A proper examination, imaging review, and diagnosis are often necessary to determine the exact cause.
